Ovidio Jimenez Roca had a successful law career in Bolivia before moving to Canada. In fact, he was the national legal affairs director for the Ministry of Labour.

Since graduating from the English Language Program at Mount Royal University, Roca has seen endless opportunities become available that were previously unavailable to him.

“I received the Mount Royal University Language Certificate and attached it to my resume, quickly I applied to companies all over Canada and received many job offers. I was overwhelmed since some of those same companies didn’t even answer my emails before,” says Roca.'

"My English studies at MRU were the missing link to connect me with my future in Canada."

Today he is a graduate with honours and works as an Immigration Law Practitioner. As fully understanding the English language is a fundamental component of interpreting and giving context to legal terms, he is now able to excel in his field in more than one language.

“This is something that I achieved thanks to my conscious preparation at MRU. For this reason, my heart will always be full of gratitude to my instructors Lory Kelly, David Asaph, and my extended family in Canada, Mount Royal University.”

In order to be able to challenge the exam to become Immigration Law Practitioner, he first had to achieve a high level of English in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Roca was able to do this and believes the English Language Program was his first step towards a successful career in Canada.

“My English studies at MRU were the missing link to connect me with my future in Canada.”

While he prepared to become an Immigration Law Practitioner Roca used the resources available to him at MRU. “I was blessed to be able to use and make the best out of all the services at the Riddell Library and Learning Centre while preparing myself for my Immigration Law Practitioner exam. The only thing that I can say is that MRU spoiled me. Gratitude is the memory of the heart.”

Now equipped with the tools required for a successful career, Roca is a shining example of the history of excellence that remains the primary focus amongst Mount Royal University English Language Program students.

“I wouldn’t be where I’m today without the incredible support, mentoring and infrastructure that Mount Royal University offers. Now that I look back some years later, I realize that studying English for an academic purpose at MRU was one of the best decisions I made when I arrived in Canada.”
