West Gate Transit Hub now open
The new West Gate Transit Hub officially opened on November 29, complete with a transit show-bus driving through a large ribbon making a grand entrance into the new hub.
At the celebration that followed, representatives from the City of Calgary, Calgary Transit and Mount Royal University spoke about what the new transit hub means, not only for the University, but for all Calgary Transit users within the community.
Designed to improve the transit experience in all seasons, the transit hub will feature a heated shelter and bus stops that bring passengers close to the West Gate entrance. It also provides a pedestrian-friendly route for students, employees and visitors to enter Mount Royal.
Improved transit service
When Calgary Transit’s West LRT line opens in December 2012, the West Gate Transit Hub will connect Mount Royal with the C-Train, thanks to the introduction of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Route 306. Starting Dec. 10, the BRT will provide express service between the new Westbrook Station, Mount Royal, and Heritage Station.
The new BRT will bring an additional 50 buses to campus each day, with trip times to campus estimated at 12 minutes from Westbrook Station and 16 minutes from Heritage Station.
Mount Royal’s new West Gate Transit Hub reflects the University’s commitment to sustainability. By making it easier for students, faculty, staff and visitors to choose public transit, walking or cycling, Mount Royal is working to improve environmental sustainability on campus, enhance public transportation, and provide better access and safety for pedestrians and cyclists.
