A.
PURPOSE
Mount Royal is committed to creating and maintaining a supportive working and learning
environment for Students and Employees that is free from Discrimination.
B.
SCOPE
This Human Rights Policy applies to all Members of the University Community.
C.
POLICY STATEMENT
1.
PRINCIPLES
1.1
Students and Employees have the right to live, work and learn in an environment
that is free from Discrimination.
1.2
All Members of the University Community are responsible for ensuring that
Students and Employees are not subject to Discrimination.
1.3
The University recognizes the variety of rights enjoyed by Members of the
University Community, including rights that are unique to the campus environment,
such as academic freedom as outlined under the Collective Agreement between
the Board and the MRFA. Academic freedom does not confer legal immunity nor
does it diminish the obligation to meet employment duties and responsibilities.
1.4
Employees are responsible for taking appropriate action to report or address
incidents of Discrimination whether brought to their attention or personally
observed.
1.5
The University has a duty to provide accommodation for Students up to the point
of undue hardship as outlined in legislation and policy.
1.6

1.7
Violations to the Human Rights Policy will be assessed and investigated through
processes under the relevant University policy, such as the Code of Student
Community Standards Policy for complaints against students and Code of Conduct
– Employee and/or the Workplace Violence and Harassment Policy for complaints
against employees.

DEFINITIONS
(1)
Discrimination:
means any action or threat of action related to a protected
ground in the Alberta Human Rights Act when the action or
threat of action results in loss of or limit on opportunities to: (i)
work or study, (ii) to fully participate in the workplace or
classroom, or (iii) offends the dignity of the person. Protected
grounds as defined by the Human Rights Act are race, colour,
ancestry, place of origin, religious beliefs, gender, gender
identity, gender expression, age, physical disability, mental
disability, marital status, family status, source of income, and
sexual orientation.

Member of the
University
Community:
Means any individual who teaches, studies, conducts
research; all Employees, contractors, volunteers, and visitors
to the University; and any other individual acting on behalf of
the University.
