Editing Fundamentals
Discover the fundamentals of professional editing and the skills and standards common to all editors. Learn why editing matters and how editing skills can be developed and refined. Be introduced to different kinds of editing (copyediting, style editing and structural editing).

Grammar and Punctuation Essentials
Brush up on basic writing skills. Review parts of speech, grammar and common grammatical mistakes. Explore sentence parts including words, phrases and clauses. Understand punctuation and common punctuation mistakes such as capitalization, abbreviations and numbers. Discuss commonly misused and misspelled words. 

Recommended:  Complete this course before beginning Editing Fundamentals.

Copy Editing and Proofreading     
Learn copy editing to ensure that documents are accurate, clear, correct, consistent and complete. Fix usage, grammatical, punctuation and mechanical errors, and maintain a consistent editorial style. Study the proofreading process and learn how to mark copy for correction.
Recommended: Complete Editing Fundamentals before beginning this course.

Once you have completed all the other courses in this certificate, create a portfolio of work samples that demonstrate your ability to carry out copyediting, proofreading and comprehensive editing with proficiency and ease. Bring to class a range of documents that you want to include in your portfolio.

Discover how the principles of page layout, typography and design can help you produce effective and readable technical documents. Put these principles into practice by designing technical documents using MS Word.

CE Bio - Professional Editing Technical Writing - ChandlerMargaret Chandler BA, MEd

Margaret Chandler is a continuing education instructor at Mount Royal University and the University of Calgary. At Mount Royal University, she teaches grammar and punctuation, effective business writing, and editing courses. She also delivers customized workshops for clients in the private and non-profit sectors. When not busy teaching, she works as a freelance editor and writer.

Margaret studied literature and journalism at the Freie Universität in Berlin and has a BA in history and a MEd in Adult and Community Education from the University of Calgary.

She greatly enjoys sharing her passion for the English language and helping people become better writers. Students appreciate the practical tools, techniques, and resources she provides that make the writing process less difficult and more rewarding.

Michelle Lomberg began teaching in the Professional Editing Extension Certificate program in 2015.  Michelle is a freelance editor and writer with over 25 years’ experience. She has worked in educational publishing, trade publishing, and marketing for clients across Canada. She holds a bachelor’s degree with honours in English, a master’s degree in environmental design, and EAC certification in structural and stylistic editing.  






Chris Garrett

Chris Garrett is the Chief Digital Officer for Rainmaker Digital (owner of Copyblogger and StudioPress brands), where he is in charge of company growth through digital channels. He is also the co-author of several books, including Problogger with Darren Rowse. He has more than 22 years of professional internet consulting, direct marketing, advertising, and web development experience, working with global brands such as Toshiba, Durex, Heinz, Procter & Gamble, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, and Coca-Cola.

Before joining Copyblogger full time, Chris ran a successful consulting business for 8 years. Chris teaches Business Blogging, Digital Writing, and SEM courses at MRU, and speaks at conferences and organizations around the world on the topics of online business, web development, and content marketing.
