A Case Study Project on the Effect of Massage Therapy on Special Populations

Mount Royal University’s Massage Therapy Diploma is seeking participants for its case-study course. The case-study course is designed to provide an opportunity for students in the diploma program to understand the effect massage therapy may have on symptoms from various conditions or pathologies. There is no cost to participate and compensation is not provided.

This three-month study has five stages:

Stage One: Week One

  • Meet with student therapist
  • Complete health history
  • Participate in all applicable assessments
  • Student therapist will create an individualized treatment plan based on their research question

Stage Two: Week Two to Five

  • Meet with student therapist to review treatment plan
  • Consent to treatment plan
  • Attend massage treatments as outlined in the treatment plan (approx. 1 massage per week)
  • Actively participate in home care
  • Participate in all applicable assessments (approx. week five)

Stage Three: Week Six

  • Meet with student therapist regarding results of assessments
  • If applicable, student therapist will revise treatment plan
  • If applicable, consent to revised treatment plan

Stage Four: Week Seven to Nine

  • Attend massage treatments as outlined in the treatment plan (approx. 1 massage per week)
  • Actively participate in home care

Stage Five: Week 10

  • Participate in all applicable assessments
  • Meet with student therapist to review results
  • Case study concludes
