Scholarly Interests:

Dr. Sundberg (Kelly) is a criminologist specializing in the professionalization of law enforcement, with a particular emphasis on agencies involved in migration and border security. His research also delves into advancing public safety, security, and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). Kelly's globally recognized research and scholarship has led him to holding adjunct professor and visiting scholar positions at the University of Calgary, University of Adelaide, and University of East London. Additionally, Kelly volunteers as an expert for government and non-government organizations, such as the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and International Standards Organization (ISO) - contributing to the creation of national and international security and resiliency standards such as ISO 22341: Guidelines for CPTED. Kelly also volunteers his time as the founding President of the SAFE Design Council, a federal not-for-profit organization focused on promoting the Security Achieved through Functional Environmental Design Standard (SAFE Design Standard™), which constitutes the first-ever risk-informed CPTED certification program in the world.

Dr. Sundberg's teaching philosophy is deeply influenced by his unique background, combining over 15 years of experience in federal law enforcement with a personal journey of overcoming learning challenges due to dyslexia. This blend of professional expertise and personal resilience informs his dedication to helping students and academic peers surmount their own learning obstacles. In the classroom, Kelly emphasizes the practical application of theory to real-world scenarios, focusing on equipping his students with the tools necessary for making rational, informed, objective, and ethical decisions in their future criminal justice careers. His approach is characterized by a commitment to fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, ensuring that his students are not only well-versed in criminal justice theories but are also prepared to apply them effectively in diverse professional contexts.
