Dawne has been teaching children or those who work with children for close to 40 years. She is currently the Director of the Centre for Child Well-Being and a professor in the Department of Child and Youth Studies. Her work has focused on child well-being as broadly defined: children’s mental health, resilience, vulnerable and at-risk children and families, and early brain development. Dawne is an active volunteer in the community and has been involved internationally supporting the development of preschool teacher education in Sri Lanka since the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 and offering field schools for students to study and learn in Asia.
