Our English Language Program Instructors

Our English Language program instructors are experienced professionals who possess extensive subject matter expertise, have international experience in language education, curriculum design, assessment and research, and take part in a variety of local and international professional development opportunities. Our instructors are TESL Canada certified or hold equivalent certification.  

David ASAPH completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Calgary. He has been teaching in Canada since 1986, first as an instructor for the Calgary School Board and then joining Mount Royal University in 2003. His focus of teaching has been world languages: English, French and Spanish, and he is currently working on adding the German language to his repertoire. David has administered and supervised TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and has developed curriculum for second languages. At MRU, he has taught English and French languages and worked as a teacher trainer and a coordinator for the Summer Immersion English Program. He is currently teaching in our Academic English program. His areas of interest in teaching include developing teaching materials, and planning, coordinating and executing programs for International students.
Pamela DOWNIE has taught refugees, immigrants and international students in Vancouver and Calgary since 1991. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Simon Fraser University, and a TESOL certificate from Vancouver Community College. She spent several years developing refugee settlement programs and teaching in the LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) program before coming to teach at Mount Royal University in 1998. Pam has recently completed her Master of Arts degree in Integrated Studies at Athabasca University with a dual focus on Adult Education and Educational Studies. The focus of her work is on critical pedagogies in multicultural education in Canada, and on learner agency and transfer of learning in distance education. Her favourite aspect of her job is the opportunity to meet and learn about people from all over the world.
Anita HIBBARD received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in English Literature and a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Education from the University of Alberta. She holds a second Bachelor of Education in TESL from Brock University and a Master of Education in TESL from the University of Calgary. She has  teaching certificates from the Departments of Education in both Alberta and Ontario, ATESL accreditation and TESL Canada certification, level 4. Anita has been a professional English language instructor since 1988, teaching at a number of institutions in Canada including Mohawk College, Brock University, and the Welland County Catholic School Board in Ontario  and Bow Valley College in Calgary. Anita began teaching at Mount Royal in 1990. She has taught Academic English levels 1-4, English Foundations, level 3, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) preparation, Office Skills, Summer Immersion and many specialty groups. In teacher training, she taught online classes for ACE (Advanced Consulting for Education) Teacher Training. Although she has taught everything from English language literacy for factory workers to advanced TOEFL preparation, her focus is on English for Academic Purposes, especially in the areas of writing and grammar. She took the position as the Lead Instructor for the Academic English program in July of 2016.
Lorry KELLY has been teaching since 1988 and has been at MRU since 1999 teaching AE (Academic English) and in the Summer English Program. She holds a Bachelor of Education degree, with a major in French as a Second Language, from the University of Regina, completed Arts and Cultural studies at the Université Canadienne en France, and has a TESOL certificate from Mount Royal University. Lorry has taught a number of subjects in French Immersion programs and the French Immersion IB (International Baccalaureate) program with the Calgary Public School Board and has taught English in Japan and in the LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) program at Bow Valley College. At Mount Royal University, she ran the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) test centre for many years and her teaching specialities are in Academic English, TOEFL, and IELTS (International English Language Testing System).


 Nicole KOWALCHUK has been teaaching EAL since 2002 and is an accredited ATESL and TESL Canada member. She graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a BA in Psychology. She has always been interested in traveling and found an opportunity to travel and teach a perfect fit for her. She taught in South Korea for four years. While in Korea, she taught all levels and ages, three years old to adult. Her experiences overseas made her passionate about teaching EAL and she came back to Canada to continue this work. Since she has been in Calgary, she has specialized in Test Preparation and administration of the TOEIC, TOEFL and IELTS exams. She has been working full time as an EAL instructor at Mount Royal University since 2007.  Her work in the area has included teaching Foundations, Academic and Communications classes as well as customized offerings. She completed the ACE TESOL Certificate program and was certified as an ACE Teacher Trainer.  Nicole enjoys working with students from all cultures and levels and believes that making students feel confident and valued in class is an important aspect to their learning success.
Gerry LANDREVILLE has been an English language practitioner for 27 years and is an accredited ATESL and TESL Canada member. He earned an Honour's degree in English Literature from the University of Manitoba, and completed an Adult Educator certificate at the University of Calgary. Gerry has taught at the Calgary Catholic Immigration Society and has been active at Bow Valley College where he taught in the part-time LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) program, and established the curriculum for this program. He also designed the intermediate/advanced grammar program for their part-time evening classes. Gerry has contributed to NorQuest College’s Rural Routes program where he worked with volunteer tutors on developing materials and strategies to help them meet their client’s diverse needs.  He has provided presentations to other English language providers in Calgary for Mount Royal University, and was the ATESL Conference Co-Chair for 2003 and 2014. He has been a full-time instructor at Mount Royal University since 1997 where he has taught in the English Foundations program, Summer English and the ACE (Advanced Consulting for Education) Teacher Training program.
Sheri MARENDIUK started teaching in the public high school system in Saskatoon in 1990. Shortly thereafter she traveled to Japan where she started teaching the English language, and fell in love with teaching adults! Her background includes a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and Master of Education from the University of Saskatchewan. She is a certified member of ATESL with Standard 3 TESL Canada certification. Sheri has been employed full-time with the Languages Institute at Mount Royal University since 1995. In addition to working at Mount Royal, Sheri has worked with Athabasca University, Calgary Immigrant Women's Association and Bow Valley College. Sheri always likes a challenge and often chooses to work on new programs at MRU so she can add her creative input to various in-house projects. Recently she has been teaching EAC Modules, Summer English and part-time classes like Talk It Up and Tune Up. She has also been engaged in training future English Language teachers in the ACE (Advanced Consulting for Education) TESOL program, working as the Bridge to Canadian Nursing Language Consultant, and working on special assignments like the Languages Institute Needs Assessment Project. In July 2017, Sheri assumed the position of Lead Teacher for the EPAC (English for Professional and Advanced Communications) program. She is enjoying the new challenges of leading the EPAC teaching team and developing new programming initiatives.
Kristi Thomas holds a Bachelor of Communication Studies from the University of Calgary, a TESL certificate from TESL Canada, and a Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) certificate. She is currently in the process of completing a Master of Arts in Learning and Technology at Royal Roads University in Victoria. Her research is focused on instructional design with an emphasis on leveraging technology to improve teaching and learning practices. Kristi started teaching at Mount Royal University (MRU) in October 2016. Since then, she has taught Academic English and English for Professional and Advanced Communication courses. Before joining MRU, Kristi taught in the English Language Foundations and International programs at SAIT. While at SAIT, she worked in Kazakhstan as both an English language instructor and mentor. She has also taught in the LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) and International programs at Bow Valley College where she contributed to curriculum development. She has experience facilitating IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exams. Kristi has been teaching English as an additional language since 2007 and enjoys learning about different cultures.
Rebecca YOUNG has completed both a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Arts in Hispanic Studies from the University of Victoria. She holds a CELTA from International House and is a qualified ACE (Advanced Consulting for Education) teacher trainer. Rebecca has taught overseas in South Korea and Spain, and has been an instructor in the Languages Institute at Mount Royal University since 2005. She has taught in both the Foundational and Academic English programs at MRU. Rebecca also developed an online listening course for internationally educated nurses for Vital English, and has worked in customized programming. She is currently delving into the world of technology in the classroom and developing curricula in both online and face-to-face environments. She is now working on a Master's degree in Educational Technology and became a Lead Instructor, with a focus on Technology and Assessment, in July 2016.
