Academy Admission and Audition Process

  • Please note that for the 2020-2021 year we have altered our audition and entrance processes due to COVID-19. These guidelines are specific to the 2020-2021 year and will be updated again in 2021 for the requirements for the 2021-2022.

  • Entrance to the Academy Program for Young Artists is by audition only - please see audition requirements for more information.

  • New applicants must fill out the online application form. Applications for the 2020-21 year are now closed. Late applications are acceptable based on a case by case basis. Please contact us if would you like to apply.
  • Any emerging young artist in Calgary, or the surrounding area, who shows clear talent, passion and dedication are eligible to apply.

  • Students who are currently in the program and are intending to return must fill out the Intent to Return Form. The deadline to fill in the form is May 1, 2020.  For the 2020-2021 year, returning students will not need to audition. They will  be placed into a level and notified of the results by May 15, 2020. If a returning student wishes to appeal the level placement, they will notify the Artistic Director and/or Program Coordinator and request an audition. The outcome of the audition will determine the level of placement. Auditions for students who are appealing their selected level will take place in June. These auditions will take place virtually, but at a slotted time and "live." A Youtube video link will not be accepted.

  • It is expected that Academy students take private instruction in their instrument. It is the responsibility of each student to make private lesson arrangements with their instructor of choice. The private instructor does not need to be affiliated with the Mount Royal University Conservatory. Private lesson costs are not included in the tuition.

  • New applicants will submit a vidoe audition. It is recommended that for virtual auditions applicants try to augment their sound quality by using a USB microphone. Click here to download a document with microphone suggestions.

  • Acceptance is determined by an audition panel consisting of Conservatory faculty.

  • Students will be notified by email of their audition results no later than July 2, 2020.

  • In order to guarantee a spot in the program and to be assigned to a chamber group and collaborative pianist, students must enroll and pay tuition fees no later than July 15, 2020. Payment plan options are available; arrangements must be made by July 15, 2020. Payment plan options allow you to pay over the course of one, or both, semesters.

*** Late applications may be considered at the program's discretion, depending on space availability.
