    Academy - Voice Program

The Vocal Academy is a program for enthusiastic, ambitious young singers seeking to enhance their opportunities and development in classical voice study. This cost effective program is designed as a supplement to a student’s private voice lessons.

The program offers a supportive environment in which singers may further develop their vocal abilities and hone their performance skills by participating in monthly recitals and group ensembles. Additionally, the program includes instruction in lyric diction, acting, movement and overall musicianship.

The program’s student body is made up of dedicated young singers as well as aspiring professionals.

Students also receive access to local professional artists and international superstars thanks to our partnership with the Wyatt Artist-in Residence Program. Guest artists from leading music institutions across Canada, the United States and Europe offer valuable instruction through lessons and master class opportunities.

Vocal Academy Alumni have continued their studies at post-secondary institutions in Europe and North America including:

  • McGill University,
  • Berklee College of Music,
  • Oberlin Conservatory,
  • Juilliard,
  • Mannes School of Music,
  • Manhattan School of Music,
  • University of Cincinnati College of Music,
  • Indiana School of Music,
  • Rice University Shepherd School of Music,
  • Royal College of Music (London),
  • New England Conservatory,

  • University of British Columbia,
  • University of Victoria,
  • Queens,
  • University of Alberta,
  • University of Lethbridge,
  • University of Calgary
  • and Mount Royal University’s own post-secondary program
Alumni who have pursued other non-music professional fields have acquired invaluable life skills and will hold a life-long passion for music and the arts.

As the Vocal Academy program is designed to act as a supplement to private voice lessons, applicants must currently study with a private teacher (teacher need not be affiliated with Mount Royal University Conservatory), must be able to read music and should have a minimum of one year of private instruction.

Admission Requirements

Admission is by audition only, with auditions taking place in May of each year. Students must have a private voice teacher and must not be enrolled in a post secondary voice program.

Entrance to the Academy Program for Young Artists is by audition only. Please check back when applications open on February 15, 2020 for details.

Any emerging young artist in Calgary or surrounding area who shows clear talent, passion and dedication is eligible to audition.

The student's private instructor does not need to be affiliated with the Conservatory.

Acceptance is determined by an audition panel consisting of Conservatory faculty.

Audition Requirements

New Vocal Academy applicants must perform two contrasting selections from the classical voice repertoire, one of which must be in a language other than English.

Returning students must perform one selection in a language other than English.

Vocal Academy students are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to their audition in order to rehearse with the collaborative pianist who will play for the audition. A $25.00 cash fee is required.

Choral Ensembles

Participation in one of the Conservatory's choral ensembles is optional. Scholarships for choir will be provided to singers who are accepted into the Vocal Academy program
