Mount Royal group among top fund raisers

Early this week, a group of nine men represented Mount Royal University in this year’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fund raiser to support the YWCA of Calgary.

Calling themselves Mount Royal Twist & Shout, the group, led by organizers Paul Varella, assistant professor in Strategy and Organizational Studies at the Bissett School of Business and Andreas Tomaszewski, assistant professor in Criminal Justice Studies, donned stunning sets of high heels for the event.

The donation-based event, which helps women and their children as they take steps to walk away from domestic violence, took place at Olympic Plaza on Sept. 21, 2009.

Although domestic violence is certainly no laughing matter, the event was light-hearted, fun and brought awareness to the cause, as local celebrities lent a hand in raising funds to support the YWCA.

Despite competing against corporate heavy hitters like the Bank of Montreal, who matched their teams’ donations, Mount Royal Twist & Shout finished in a very impressive fifth place by raising $5,505.

At the time of the event the YWCA reported having raised $132,486 through just online donations alone. They are very confident they will meet their largest goal ever of $150,000 once all of the on-site donations have been calculated.
