Become an advocate for child and youth human rights and inform your professional practice through this online program that focuses on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). This program is ideal for those working with and for children and youth of all ages, in family and community settings.

Earn credit toward a degree/diploma.
Certain Extension Certificates have been developed in cooperation with the Mount Royal University credit faculties. These certificates have components which are transferable into various diplomas, applied degrees and degrees, provided applicants achieve the minimum required grade in the course(s) and meet the entrance requirements for the degree. Requirements
Learners must have access to and skills in MS Word and PowerPoint to succeed in this program. Students must meet APA standards when completing all assignments to succeed in this program. Connection to the Internet (a DSL or cable modem is recommended) is required in order to access all course information.

Earning Your Extension Certificate
Complete the four required courses (60 hours) with a minimum grade of 60% in each course.

Required Courses

Promotion of CRC: Child and Youth Advocacy
This prerequisite course on promotion of CRC introduces the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), a document that accords every child and youth in the world special inherent rights and freedoms, which according to Article 42, must also be made widely known to adults. It examines the key principles to support human service professionals in their roles as child and youth human rights advocates.

Protection Rights: Child and Youth Welfare
This course focuses on protection rights, which are child and youth human rights to protection from all forms of harm including abuse, exploitation and violence. This course also addresses implementation of protection rights, including society’s responsibility to provide children and youth with protective care through legislation, services and professional practice.
Prerequisite: Promotion of CRC: Child and Youth Advocacy

Provision Rights: Child and Youth Healthy Development
This course focuses on provision rights, which address human rights of children and youth to an adequate standard of living that supports their healthy development. This course also addresses implementation of provision rights, including society’s responsibility to provide children and youth with health care as well as opportunities for education and play.
Prerequisite: Promotion of CRC: Child and Youth Advocacy

Participation Rights: Child and Youth Responsible Citizenship
This course focuses on participation rights, which recognize children and youth as developing persons who are capable of exercising civic rights as they move toward responsible citizenship. This course also addresses implementation of participation rights, which includes society’s responsibility to provide children and youth with opportunities for expressing opinions and taking active roles in their communities.
