How long does it take to complete the certificate?
Most learners complete the certificate in 18 months to two years.
What is the difference between negotiation and mediation?
Negotiation is a process that two parties use to settle their differences by themselves. Mediation is a cooperative, interest-based process of negotiation managed by a neutral third party with the goal of mutually resolving the problem in a way that is satisfactory to both sides.
How do I get started?
Introduction to Conflict Resolution is the prerequisite to all of the other courses. It is offered in a classroom version and an online version that can be used towards either the 220-hour Conflict Resolution Certificate or the 45-hour online Managing Conflict In Today's Workplace Certificate of Completion. We strongly recommend completion of Communication in Conflict Resolution next before registering in further courses.
Are there any prerequisites for this program?
There are no educational prerequisites to enter the program; however, Introduction to Conflict Resolution is the prerequisite for all of the other courses.
What is the assessment process?
To receive your Conflict Resolution Certificate you must successfully the nine required courses plus three optional courses. You must then complete and pass a negotiation or a mediation assessment.
What is the Final Assessment?
In the Mediation or Negotiation Final Assessment you will facilitate an actual session.
What other training opportunities are available?
Mount Royal University Continuing Education can assist your organization to assess and recommend cost-effective training solutions customized to meet your needs. Sessions can take place at your facility or ours - days, evenings or weekends.
How does the program transfer to professional designations in the conflict resolution field?
Our program satisfies the educational component of the Alberta Family Mediation Society's Practicing Member, Registered Mediator - General Family Mediation, Registered Mediator - Separation and Divorce Mediation and Registered Mediator - Family Business Mediation designations, as well as the ADR Institute of Canada's Chartered Mediator designation. In addition to our program you will need to gain mediation experience to be eligible for any of the above designations.
