Background

There is a current need for Internationally Educated Nurses who reside in Canada or in their country of origin to have access to an online course that will:

  • facilitate their understanding of the licensure process in Canada
  • introduce the basics of the nursing scope of practice in Canada, the Canadian health care system, primary health care and practice settings in Canada
  • prepare for the competency assessment processes that may be required prior to licensure in Canada

Outcomes

  • Explain the processes for becoming a Registered Nurse in Canada.
  • Explore resources that will support Internationally Educated Nurses in becoming Registered Nurses in Canada.
  • Describe the Canadian health care system and how this directs the practice of nursing.
  • Compare and contrast the scope of professional nursing in Canada with the scope of nursing in other countries.

Canadian Health Care System and Professional Registered Nursing Practice
This online course provides the foundation for Internationally Educated Nurses to understand the Canadian health care system and the roles within the nursing profession in Canada. It also provides links to resources available to assist you through the processes involved in becoming a Registered Nurse in Canada.
Note: Complete the entire course online within a one-month period. Course materials required for the online course are provided electronically on the course site – you are not required to purchase any materials.
