Providing a solid understanding of the industry's financial practices, government regulations, and the role of  production accountants, this certificate is ideal for people looking for their first job in the oil and gas industry, as well as current industry professionals eager to expand their knowledge. 

Mount Royal offers this program in two formats: take advantage of small class sizes with our learner-focused lectures (delivered by industry experts from the Canadian Association of Petroleum Production Accounting) or choose independent study to learn from home, on your own schedule.

New! Complete your certificate in only two semesters with our new format (three evenings per week). Offered again in the Fall 2012 semester.

Electronic materials are included in course fee. Printed material available at the BookStore for additional fee. We strongly recommend completion of an introductory accounting course and MS Excel course before starting CAPPA level 2 in this program.

CAPPA requires all students to complete additional online training modules provided by CAPPA and the Alberta Government Registry. The fee for each course includes access to the online Alberta Registry modules.

Requirements
Canadian high school diploma or equivalent or mature student status with at least two years of business experience. Internet access required.

Earning Your CAPPA Certificate
Complete the five required courses (244 hours) with a minimum grade of 70% in each course. The certificate must be completed within five years. CAPPA requires all students to complete additional online training modules provided by CAPPA and the Alberta Government Registry. The fee for each course includes access to the online Alberta Registry modules.

CAPPA Level 1: Challenge Exam
If you have oil and gas industry experience that includes specific course content, you can challenge Level 1 by taking a 4-hour exam with approximately 200 multiple-choice and true/false questions. Successful completion of the exam allows for course credit; however, if you do not receive a passing grade you must take the course. There are no rewrite options.
Note: This exam must be written within 4 weeks of registration. Pass mark is 70%.

Oilfield practices and procedures, ERCB requirements, land agreements, oil royalties, and BC and Saskatchewan reporting.

Alberta Allowable Costs
Gain a deeper understanding of allowable cost fundamentals through hands-on examples of cost calculations, including operating costs, capital costs and custom processing fees. This focuses on Facility Cost Centre (FCC) set-up, gathering data, and best practices in coding invoices and fees to insure that all allowable costs are accurately captured.

Gas Allocations
Review the principles and calculations used in the gas allocation process (Volumetric Allocations). You will be guided through the processes from evolution to specific calculations. British Columbia Crown Royalites
Understand the purpose of the inputs and mechanics of royalty reporting in British Columbia. Through the use of hands-on exercises and open dialogue, participants should gain a working knowledge of the royalty system in BC. In addition, common incentive and royalty programs unique to British Columbia, which are available to producers, will also be examined.
