What is Open Studies?
Open Studies is the program option for students who do not wish to enter a specific program of study at this time.

When can I apply for Academic Upgrading and/or Open Studies?
Check Critical Dates to view the application period for the semester you wish to attend. Apply online and choose “Open Studies” in the program choice section and pay the application fee.

When can I register for my classes?
New students will receive a letter from the Admissions and Recruitment Office with instructions. Check Critical Dates for the registration dates for the semester you wish to attend. Register online via MyMRU.

What if my course has a prerequisite?
The specific prerequisites for all courses can be found in the course description section of the current Mount Royal University Calendar. Proof of successful completion of a prerequisite course must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar prior to the first day of classes. Failure to provide proof of successful completion will result in deregistration from that course.

What if I don't know which level of upgrading course to take?
Try one of our free online self assessments to determine your academic level.

What if a course is restricted?
Some courses at Mount Royal University are restricted to students in specific programs. Unless the restriction is for the program in which you are enrolled, you will receive an error message.

May I change to a different section of a course?
Yes, but make sure that the section of the course you want is available before you drop the one in which you are currently registered.

How will I know if I have received a wait-listed course?
If your wait-listed course or section becomes available, you will automatically be registered for it. Two weeks prior to the start of each semester all pre-established waitlists will be terminated and the option to waitlist will no longer be available. It is your responsibility to check to see if you have been registered in a waitlisted course and pay fees by the fee payment deadline.

How do I pay my fees?
- Log on to MyMRU and pay by Mastercard or Visa.
- Through your bank, using online or telephone banking. Use your student ID as the payment account number and allow for two business days for bank processing.
- On campus, drop your cheque/money order into the drop box located at the Office of the Registrar in Kerby Hall. Be sure to include your Student ID number on your payment.

When do my classes start?
Check the Critical Dates listings for the first day of classes for the semester you will be attending.

How many courses can I take at a time?
Open Studies students can normally enrol in a maximum of 5 credit and/or academic upgrading courses during the Winter and Fall semesters, and a maximum of 2 credit and/or academic upgrading courses during the Spring semester.
