2021-22 Season Update

MRU Conservatory is very excited to announce that we are planning to resume our Early Childhood program for the 2021/22 Season! Currently we are planning to resume classes online and transition to in-person learning as soon as AHS and MRU guidelines allow. We remain committed to the safety of all our students and instructors even as we are anxious to resume face-to-face instruction and see everyone return to campus again!

Please note that Kodaly levels 4-5 are scheduled to resume for the Winter 2022 term but please check our Program Updates page for the most current information.

Kodály Musicianship classes establish a firm foundation of musicianship skills for children in a creative and positive musical atmosphere. Using singing voices as their first instrument, children are actively engaged as they develop music reading and writing skills that prepare budding musicians for future studies. Some of these skills, based on the Kodály methodology, include:

  • a focus on in-tune singing
  • identifying the beat, rhythm, melody, and harmony through singing, reading, and writing
  • identifying phrasing and form
  • understanding how the use of dynamics, tempo, and timbre help to mold a beautiful piece of music.

Xylophones and rhythm instruments are used to reinforce concepts first heard through singing. In advanced levels, the recorder is introduced to reinforce music reading skills.

Classes are kept small in order to provide more individualized attention and a flexible learning environment. There are 16 classes per term, each 60 minutes in length. Since parental involvement is an essential component of the Kodály Program, they will join their children for the final 10 minutes of each class and are encouraged to share musical activities at home. Children have weekly take-home activities to reinforce the lessons.
