About the piano

Here at the Conservatory we represent the diversity of piano instruction offering lessons in Classical, Jazz, and Suzuki piano in our world class facilities. Our goal is create a positive student experience for all ages and abilities by pairing them with instructors who will help them reach their goals. Whether students are beginners, looking to play for fun, or serious about pursuing a musical career, the Conservatory has something for everyone!

Classical Piano

Our instructors offer adaptive and flexible programming that best meets the needs of the students, their goals, and musical aspirations. Classical piano lessons prepare students to delve more deeply, not only into the works of Bach and Beethoven, but also contemporary artists. It provides the foundation upon which other musical styles build and through which students can expand their repertoire and musical horizons.

Piano group classes

These classes are designed specifically for beginners who wish to start learning the piano in an engaging, social environment, that provides them with a firm foundation in traditional piano lessons. Group piano lessons provide a fantastic opportunity to indroduce your child to the piano without the daunting cost of individual lessons. This style of class allows for a first-hand look at your child as they grow into young musicians and to see the potential and work involved in taking lessons privately.

Jazz piano

Thinking of moving from Bach to boogie, from Stravinsky to stride? Pick up the elements of jazz through individualized lessons with our accomplished and enthusiastic jazz instructors.

Students will explore the differences and similarities between classical piano and styles which fall under the heading of "jazz" — including Swing, Latin, Funk, and more!

Students will also be exposed to elements of harmony, how it was pioneered by impressionist composers, then adopted by jazz musicians; and improvisation, once so important in classical music, but now found primarily in jazz.

Suzuki Piano

Ages 3+

Suzuki Piano is specifically geared towards younger students to help them engage with and explore music in a fun, creative, and supportive environment. Children usually begin between the ages of 3 and 5 with one of their parents with our instructors in a private studio setting. Throughout the Suzuki growing process, the student thrives in an atmosphere of continual support and understanding. Every aspect of the Suzuki program is dedicated to the child — from repertoire, lesson length and seating at the instrument to the positive pedagogic approach. Parents participate actively, attending lessons and practicing with their child at home.

Students also participate in group music lessons with similar aged children and their parents. Group lessons allow students to have fun with their peers while they explore music theory, posture development, performance practice, tone study, ensemble playing, etc. Public recitals are held during both the Fall and Spring terms. As well, informal get-togethers and home concerts provide frequent performance opportunities.

The MRU Conservatory's Suzuki Piano Program is supported by the Mount Royal Suzuki Piano Parents Association (MRSPPA).
