How do you actually start a business?

How do you actually start a business? How much money does it cost? Where do I find people to help me? These were a few of the questions recent alumni Kelsey Prout had upon starting at Mount Royal University. Today, she’s the Founder of BeMuse.

Kelsey Prout is an entrepreneur who encourages individuals to reduce their negative social and environmental impact through their consumer clothing purchases.  She came to Mount Royal University after completing a Diploma of Fashion Business and Creative Arts at the John Casablanca Institute of Applied Arts in Vancouver. Her love for fashion was quickly paired with a shocking realization; the detrimental effects of the fashion industry on both the environment and millions of people around the world.

While completing her Bachelor of Business Administration at MRU, Kelsey founded Good + Wild (formally Bemuse), a Canadian hub offering an array of carefully selected sustainably sourced and ethically manufactured apparel for men and women. With the apparel industry changing due to consumer demand and an heightened awareness of our impact, Good + Wild plays an important role in accelerating the slow fashion industry by improving the availability of sustainable apparel and products in North America. Kelsey supports and sells brands including Sitka, Free Label, and Synergy. She was a 2016 JMH $70,000 LaunchPad Pitch Competition winner, as well as a winner at the ATB BoostR Post Secondary Edition.

Through the launch of her business and her experience in the entrepreneurship program at MRU, Kelsey learned the grit and determination it takes to be an entrepreneur. She also found a tribe of peers who were going through the same process, supporting one another and sharing insights along the way. Kelsey graduated from MRU in 2017 and is now out in the world growing her social enterprise and changing the world!
