Muscle Energy Techniques

Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) is a manual therapy technique that uses the gentle muscle contractions by the patient to relax and lengthen muscles, and normalize joint motion. MET can be used to address acute or chronic injuries, or maintain normal joint range of motion to optimize physical performance.

This course is for certified, licensed or registered allied health care professionals with an interest in expanding their knowledge and skills in the rehabilitation and reconditioning of orthopedic injuries. It provides an alternative manual approach to address sacroiliac and iliosacral dysfunctions.

For those not certified, licensed or registered, it is beneficial to have completed or currently be in the final semester of a healthcare or fitness professional program.

Upon completion of the course, the student will

  • Understand regional musculoskeletal anatomy for the lumbar spine, pelvis, hip and implications related to normal and dysfunctional movement.
  • Refine palpation skills to locate relevant regional musculoskeletal structures for the purpose of evaluating and treating dysfunctions.
  • Review basic muscle physiology.
  • Understand and apply the physiological principles of reciprocal and autogenic inhibition.
  • Understand and apply Fryette's laws of spinal mechanics to evaluate and treat Type I and Type II dysfunctions.
  • Understand and apply assessment findings to treat sacroiliac and iliosacral dysfunctions of the lumbar spine, pelvis and hips.
  • Understand indications, contraindications and precautions for using MET.
  • Understand, apply and practice the MET evaluation and treatment protocols.
  • Evaluate and treat hip, lumbar spine and pelvic dysfunctions using the MET protocols.
