Janice Paskey memorial scholarship

Janice was a passionate advocate for honest and compelling journalism. She believed in digging deep and respecting her readers with well-researched stories that revealed the truth of a subject. Her integrity and intelligence made her a consummate reporter - she was smart, curious, unafraid to ask the tough questions, and unflinching in her appraisals. These skills were the foundation of a successful journalism career. She attained a BA in Journalism from Carleton University and served as the editor of both the McGill News Alumni Magazine in Montreal and Avenue Magazine in Calgary before joining the journalism faculty at Mount Royal University.

In her 17 years as a professor at MRU, Janice passed those values of hard work, integrity and honesty on to the next generations of journalists. She was a dedicated teacher and mentor, often meeting with students after graduation to offer practical support, information about possible jobs, and letters of reference. She was always thrilled when a graduate landed a great job!

Janice was also a well-known and respected volunteer, working tirelessly to ensure that her community grew in a planned, thoughtful manner that brought people together and enhanced the quality of their lives.

Loyalty and commitment defined Janice's personal life. She loved her family deeply, sharing many adventures with her husband over the years and supporting with pride the numerous achievements of her sons. She was also one of those rare people who actively kept in touch with the many, many people she met throughout her life. She was a connector, a community-builder, a mentor, a devoted wife, mother, sister and daughter, and a valued friend to many.

The Janice Paskey Memorial Scholarship has been established by Janice's Book Club to honour her unwavering commitment to the field of journalism and to support the talented students who choose to do this important work.
