Jesse Hebenton lived with a spirit of adventure and curiosity that inspired those around him. He had a natural way of encouraging others to explore the outdoors and approach life with openness and enthusiasm. His passion was contagious and his presence left a lasting impression on his two daughters, his friends, his family and the many people who shared adventures with him.
Jesse grew up in Calgary in the community of Haysboro, attending Haysboro Elementary, Woodman Junior High, and Henry Wisewood High School. During those years, he formed many close friendships and could often be found longboarding through the city with friends, covering endless kilometres together.
After travelling through Southeast Asia, Jesse found his path in the Ecotourism and Outdoor Leadership program at Mount Royal University. His time in the program shaped his love for outdoor leadership and deepened his sense of purpose. A field school experience in Norway was especially meaningful and strengthened his commitment to pursuing a life connected to the outdoors. Even after graduating, Jesse stayed connected to the program and enjoyed encouraging students who were beginning their own journeys. Drawing on the skills and knowledge he acquired at Mount Royal University, Jesse went on to create a successful outdoor business.
Jesse believed deeply in helping others experience the outdoors. He was passionate about reducing barriers that might prevent anyone from enjoying the outdoors, striving to ensure a sense of inclusion and belonging for all. Whether sharing knowledge, helping someone find the right gear for an adventure, or spending time on a trail or river, he brought genuine enthusiasm and generosity to everything he did.
This award honours Jesse’s adventurous spirit and his passion for exploration. Through this legacy, we hope to support students who share his love of the outdoors and his desire to inspire others to experience it.
