Strategic Sustainability and the Energy Industry: An Introduction
In this course you will explore the pedagogy for the program and be introduced to an overview of what is meant by strategic sustainability. This course provides definitions of sustainability and identifies why strategic sustainability is critical for societies, businesses, and ecosystems to thrive. You will explore sustainability in theory and application from both a global perspective and in more local contexts. You will think critically as you examine tensions in sustainability. Finally, you will consider current issues in energy and sustainability.

Strategic Sustainability and the Energy Industry: Society and Engagement
This course is a key section of the program and it sets the stage for understanding the concepts of environment and economics presented in the last course from a socially-informed perspective. This course includes an in-depth exploration of stakeholder engagement and the social elements of sustainability from global, regional and local contexts. You will be presented with a high-level overview of stakeholder topics in Canada, including land rights and court cases, engagement approaches, and an awareness of Indigenous cultures and perspectives.

Strategic Sustainability and the Energy Industry: Environment and Economy
In this course you will explore the meanings of “Environment” and undertake a global to regional to local consideration of environmental issues. These issues include climate change, pollution, water scarcity, reclamation, conservation and others. In addition, you will examine the utility of Environmental Management Systems as a tool to manage issues.

You will then examine the economic pillar, considering economic concepts central to understanding of business in the sustainability context. These concepts include the business case for sustainability, innovation, reporting, transparency, and marketing and differentiation. You will understand how economics is central to sustainability and also how sustainability is central to business. You will also explore the importance of collaboration and its role within industry.
