CE Logo - Blue SealStrong leadership skills are crucial to improving individual and organizational performance. Successful organizations develop their leaders at all levels. The Leadership Development Extension Certificate is designed for individuals who aspire to become a leader, are transitioning into a new leadership role, or wish to further build their skills and strengths as a leader.

This lean, focused program delivers a flexible, interactive, performance-based approach to leadership development. Through the use of self-assessments (MBTI, DiSC Classic, Leadership Practices Inventory), guided learning activities and real world practice, participants will develop their leadership skills at four levels: personal, interpersonal, team and organizational. Students will gain exposure to practical tools, strategies and best practices for managing the challenges of becoming a leader.

Working interactively with instructors who are experienced industry experts as well as peers, students will develop key skills in the areas of strategic thinking, action planning, communication, emotional intelligence, interpersonal effectiveness, team leadership, decision making and leading change.

This program is eligible towards Blue Seal Certification.

Effective Leadership
Explore what it means to be an effective leader. Through various self assessment tools, reflective exercises, guided learning activities and discussions, participants will gain self-awareness of their personal leadership values, style and strengths. Through real-world application and dialogue, examine successful leadership principles, practices, skills, characteristics and behaviours for the 21st Century.

Textbooks (required):
The Leadership Challenge, 6th Ed. and The Leadership Practices Inventory and the Myers Briggs MBTI Form (Self Scorable) available at the Cougars Campus Store. Students taking the course online must also purchase Introduction to Type and Leadership.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills for Leaders
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are among the most important skills a leader can develop. Great leaders communicate clearly, authentically and persuasively to build trust, rapport, respect and understanding. This course introduces techniques and best practices to develop and improve relationships with peers, teams, managers, customers and stakeholders.

Leading and Influencing Others
Effective leaders set clear goals, communicate vision, foster collaboration, build strong teams and cultivate trusting relationships. In this course, participants will explore the best practices, strategies and tools for leading, developing and influencing others. Key topics include: leading and motivating high performance, listening and involving others in the decision making process, facilitating consensual decision making, and fostering a culture of collaboration and cooperation.

Exemplary leaders use the power of shared vision and instill hope for a better future. Explore leadership and culture as two sides of the same coin, including the leader's role in building high engagement and high performance cultures. Discover specific strategies and techniques for managing change, including appreciative inquiry, strategic planning and employee engagement.

Originally from the UK, I arrived in Canada in 2008 and I am now a proud Canadian citizen.

I have more than 25 years of experience in human resources and organizational development, both within business and as a consultant. I have worked in a range of market sectors, including food services, retailing, construction, IT, pharmacy, and of course education. I am a Certified Training and Development Professional with a master’s degree in Mentoring and Coaching, and a post-graduate qualification in learning and development.

Currently, I am a freelance consultant, in addition to my work at MRU. I have been fortunate enough to be involved with the Leadership Development program in MRU’s Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension for about four years. I regularly facilitate two courses: Communication and Interpersonal Skills for Leaders, and Leading and Influencing Others. 

My other work includes:

  • Providing critical human resources support to subject matter experts in the Calgary area.
  • Working with a local non-profit organization designing and running programming for vulnerable parts of the population, including families and immigrants. Programming covers topics such as literacy and parenting skills, financial management, healthy relationships, parenting after violence, communication and much more. This work has involved me also working at the Calgary Remand Centre working with inmates to help them prepare for release.

Lillas Hatala has a graduate degree in Continuing Education, is a Certified Human Resources Professional, Certified Management Consultant, Certified Inspirational Coach, Certified Feminine Power Coach and a member of the International Leadership Association. She has over 25 years' experience as a leading-edge leadership and management development practitioner, facilitator, coach and consultant, working with individuals, teams and organizations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors on a global basis.

Lillas is the coauthor of Integrative Leadership (2005), T he Integrative Leadership Study Guide (2008), The Business Case for Leadership Development (2008) and numerous published articles. She was the former Faculty Director of Business and Leadership Programs, University of Saskatchewan - a position she passionately served from 1992 to 2007. Her most recent collaborative initiative is Women in Leadership for Life (WILL).

Her current work through her own organization, Integrative Leadership International Ltd., challenges leaders to expand their awareness or consciousness and bring greater levels of awareness and significance to their lives, their teams and to their organizations. Her interest in the integrative or "whole" person has led her to become a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT500) with the International Yoga Association, and to study at the Chopra Centre for Wellbeing, Shambala Institute, Center for Timeless Being and Sivananda Organization, among others.

Joanne has been a student and advocate of leadership development, change and corporate culture for two decades. She has provided culture leadership and training to a variety of organizations, most recently at WestJet Airlines, where her contributions were instrumental in their success and attainment of Canada's Most Admired Corporate Culture and admission to the Corporate Culture Hall of Fame.

With practical business experience, she brings years of design and facilitation expertise into the classroom. In addition to leadership functions with small, medium and large enterprises, Joanne is a successful entrepreneur who understands the practical application of leadership and change principles. Rowena's career began with one of the world's largest gaming companies, MGM Mirage International. There she trained employees and initiated training services throughout multiple properties and MGM's corporate educational facility: MGM Mirage University.

Rowena's passion for business, education and organizational development continued as a manager with Rapport Leadership International where she trained and consulted with business leaders throughout North America. Rowena's various leadership roles have allowed her to support, guide and collaborate with senior business executives on leadership development, strategic management, employee engagement, talent management and team communication.

As president, management consultant and speaker with Lighthouse Partners, Rowena serves as the company's learning innovator, constantly exploring new methods and subjects matters related to life, leadership and service. Rowena also works with universities and public schools throughout Canada in developing community youth excellence through various learning initiatives.

Rowena has an MBA from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor's degree specializing in organizational development.
