What is the Protection of Privacy Act?
The Protection of Privacy Act (the “POPA”) is Provincial legislation that applies to Mount Royal University regarding how the institution must manage identifiable personal information in a manner that protects the personal privacy of individuals.
The purposes of the POPA consist of the following:
- To control the collection, use and disclosure of personal information by the University,
- To allow individuals a right to request corrections to personal information about themselves that is held by the University,
- To control the creation, use and disclosure of data derived from personal information and non-personal data by the University, and
- To provide for independent reviews of decisions made by the University under the POPA and the resolution of complaints through the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
What is CASL?
Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) prohibits sending certain commercial electronic messages (CEMs) without first obtaining the recipient's consent. CEMs are any electronic message (e.g. emails, texts), that encourage participation in a commercial activity.
The core activities of the University, including the teaching, learning, scholarship, research and student support operations of the University, are not considered commercial activities. Emails sent in relation to these operations are not CEMs and CASL does not apply to those communications. In addition, CASL contains several exemptions that may apply to certain electronic communications from the University.
If you would like additional information about CASL, please view the Mount Royal University CASL web page or contact caslinfo@mtroyal.ca.
What is Records and Information Management (RIM)?
The Mount Royal University Records and Information Management (RIM) program is responsible for providing the systematic control of University business records throughout their entire lifecycle, which includes their creation, receipt, maintenance, use, and final disposition.
