Mount Royal University launches $250 million fundraising campaign
(CALGARY — April 11, 2011) Mount Royal University officially announced the launch of the most significant fundraising campaign in its 100-year history today, during an event at Mount Royal’s Roderick Mah Centre for Continuous Learning.
Hal Kvisle, chair of Mount Royal’s Changing the Face of Education fundraising campaign and former president and CEO, TransCanada Corporation, announced a fundraising goal of $250 million, with $125 million from the private sector and $125 million in public funding.
The campaign is being led by four co-chairs: including Kvisle, past chair of Mount Royal’s Board of Governors; Bruce MacKenzie, regional president for RBC and member of the Board of Governors; Jennifer Pierce, vice president Commercial Management, TransAlta Corporation and chair of the Foundation Board of Directors; and Mount Royal president Dave Marshall.
Total funds raised as of this date are $141,775,500. Three more donations were announced during the launch. Donations from ARC Resources Limited ($250,000), TransAlta ($1 million) and David Bissett ($5 million) were revealed. RBC was also recognized for a previous contribution of $1.1 million which is included in this total.
“We are well on our way to reaching our campaign goal, and it is gratifying today to see such a broad range of support from donors throughout our community,” says Mount Royal University President, Dave Marshall. “They all believe in Mount Royal’s aspiration of becoming Canada’s premier undergraduate university based on the success and satisfaction of our students.”
The funds raised through Mount Royal’s Changing the Face of Education campaign will support three priorities:
• Learning opportunities: $40 million in private funding for scholarships and bursaries for students.
• Learning environment: $30 million in private funding to establish Centres of Excellence which will take student learning and faculty expertise to the next level.
• Learning spaces: $55 million in private funding supported by $125 million in public funding that will go toward student research facilities in Science and Health and a new Library and Learning Centre as well as supplementing the municipal, provincial and federal funding in place for a new Conservatory and Concert Hall.
