Champions of literacy
Bachelor of Education — Elementary students Fatima Sammoud and Jessica Cuillerier have each won a 2024 Siobhan Isabella Reid Memorial Scholarship for their volunteer efforts teaching students to read. Both work for various organizations that support students with learning disabilities. Read more.
Honoured with the Deb Tomlinson Award for Excellence in Collaboration
Dr. Gaye Warthe, PhD, has been recognized as the recipient of the prestigious Deb Tomlinson Award for Excellence in Collaboration by the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services (AASAS) board of directors. This award highlights Warthe’s outstanding ability to unite diverse perspectives and strengths toward achieving a common goal: creating safer communities free from sexual violence. The award will be presented at the AASAS annual general meeting on Sept. 20, 2024.
Dr. Marva Ferguson receives the President’s Award
In celebration of Jamaica’s 62nd year of independence, the Jamaican Canadian Alberta Association hosted a civic ceremony on Aug. 3, 2024, where Dr. Marva Ferguson, PhD, was honoured with the President’s Award. Ferguson was recognized for her significant contributions to higher education, particularly in Black history, and for her efforts in combating anti-black racism and mentoring youth in the community. This award underscores her dedication to fostering community engagement and creating positive change.
