Mount Royal University launches Alberta’s only
Bachelor of Midwifery degree

(CALGARY — May 3, 2011) Mount Royal University officially announced the launch of Alberta’s only Bachelor of Midwifery degree this morning during a brief ceremony in the Bissett School of Business Atrium.

Alberta’s newest four-year degree was announced by Brenda Hendrickson, Dean of Mount Royal’s Faculty of Health and Community Studies.

“Today’s announcement marks a key milestone for the mothers and families of Alberta,” says Hendrickson. “This distinctly ‘made in Alberta’ program reflects the continuing evolution of health care in the province — particularly the choices available to women for the safe delivery of their babies.”

The launch of the Bachelor of Midwifery is part of Mount Royal’s commitment to providing access to high-quality degree programs that are relevant to our students and to our community.

“Mount Royal University’s Bachelor of Midwifery program will allow students to pursue their passion for helping Alberta women and their newborns,” said Greg Weadick, Minister of Advanced Education and Technology. “It is a very welcome addition to our Campus Alberta system and I congratulate the University for making this program a reality.”

The new degree addresses the strong and growing demand for practicing midwives in Alberta and across Canada.

“Training and educating more midwives will mean more expectant mothers will get the quality care they want and need throughout the most important experience in their lives,” said Gene Zwozdesky, Minister of Health and Wellness. “This new degree program will result in less stress on the system and on other health care professionals. Providing the right mix of health professionals in Alberta is a key piece of our 5-Year Health Action Plan.”
