The Outstanding Alumni Awards recognize Mount Royal alumni who exemplify the vision and values of Mount Royal in their professional work and/or community activities. The Mount Royal Alumni Association bestows the Outstanding Alumni Awards annually on alumni who continue to represent the vision and values of their alma mater; opening minds and changing lives.

Who should be recognized and celebrated?
Mount Royal University is a unique place and community that celebrates alumni who are authentic, bold and inquisitive; who create belonging, transform systems, open minds and change lives; they show up with heart, hoping to make a difference.
Not sure if the alum you want to nominate will be considered for an Outstanding Alumni Award? Review the criteria below to get a better sense of what we're looking for.

Changing lives
Alumni who are changing lives:
- Have a measurable positive impact on the individuals or groups they serve;
- Identify service and program gaps and work to build appropriate solutions;
- Make systems or organizations more accessible and equitable; and
- Create opportunities for others to improve their own circumstances and that of their families and communities

Bold
Alumni who are bold:
- Demonstrate the ability to take risks and act boldly in pursuit of creating significant change or impact, doing so with courage, collaboration and confidence;
- Are ambitious and comfortable challenging traditional expectations;
- Are often on their own journey of self-discovery; and
- View challenges as opportunities and adapt through new ways of thinking and doing.

Authentic
Alumni who are authentic:
- Know who they are and show up in the community in their unique and individual way;
- Through their own self-awareness they are able to put others first and support people in their community to do the same;
- Are true to themselves, stand up for their beliefs and make a positive impact in the lives of others, in their communities, and in the world; and,
- Are leaders and trailblazers, creating a path for others for years to come.

Inquisitive
Alumni who are inquisitive:
- Are life-long learners, continually seeking new opportunities to learn and grow;
- Create opportunities for dialogue and inquiry rooted in free expression, together with civility, mutual respect and empathy;
- Pursue scholarly inquiry through research and innovation to inform teaching and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and practice; and,
- Apply their knowledge for societal good

Creating belonging
Alumni who create belonging:
- Celebrate the diversity of people, culture, and ideas by fostering safe and inclusive spaces;
- Are committed to providing accessible experiences and opportunities for personal and professional growth for equity-deserving groups;
- Support people to be who they want to be through opportunities and personal growth; and,
- Are rooted in their own community (Calgary or other) and/or the Mount Royal alumni community through active engagement and participation.

Transformative
Alumni who are transformative:
- Demonstrate positivity and are future-focused with the energy to create and lead;
- Address change in the world with courage, connection and capability;
- Demonstrate impact in an evolving world; and
- Create systems change and bring about new ways of being and doing.

Opening minds
Alumni who are opening minds:
- Work to support others to learn new skills, gain knowledge and explore different ways of knowing;
- Recognize that people and communities are shaped by their own experiences and that these experiences are not universal;
- Support people and communities to better understand one another and build empathy and compassion between diverse groups and cultures; and
- Are bridge-builders, collaborators, and community networkers who bring people together.

Q. What is the criteria for the Outstanding Alumni Awards program?
The MRU Outstanding Alumni Awards celebrate alumni who exemplify the vision and values of Mount Royal University through their professional and/or community work. Alignment with these values and demonstrating how the nominee exemplifies them is critical to the success of the nomination. Please review the MRU vision and value statements.
Q. Who is eligible?
Nominees must meet the university’s definition of alumni to be eligible.
Nominees must NOT be any of the following:
- Honorary Degree recipients
- Alumni who have previously received any type of MRU alumni award
- Current members of the MRU Alumni Council, Selection Committee, or Board of Governors
- Individuals currently serving as elected public officials
Q. Who can I use as a reference for my nomination?
Strong references should have direct knowledge of either the nominee’s professional work or community activities (or both) and can speak in detail to the information provided in the nomination application. Family members of the nominee cannot serve as references. References will be contacted via email about their letter of support, which must be provided by the deadline given.
Q. What are the next steps after I submit my nomination?
- The Office of Alumni Relations will review all nominations for eligibility and appropriateness
- References are contacted via email to provide letters of support by the requested deadline
- The nominator and references will be notified when the nomination package is complete
Q. How many awards are given out each year?
Up to seven.
Q. How are the recipients selected?
The Outstanding Alumni Awards Selection Committee, chaired by an Alumni Council member, will select the recipients. Each member of the Selection Committee reviews and scores each nomination package. When selecting award recipients, the committee seeks consensus wherever possible.
Q. When will the recipients be notified?
Alumni who are selected to receive an award will be notified via a phone call by mid-May 2026. Nominators and references will be notified by email. A public announcement will be made in September 2026.
Q. Who can be a member of the Selection Committee?
Anyone who is an MRU alum can apply to be a member of the Selection Committee. The volunteer application form is shared via the MRU alumni social channels and on the OAA website whenever there are open positions to fill on the committee.
Q. What do award recipients receive?
Each Outstanding Alumni Award recipient will receive an award plaque and a $500 professional development bursary from TD Insurance.
Q. How are the award recipients recognized?
All recipients will receive recognition on the MRU Alumni website and social media channels, as well as at the awards ceremony in the fall.
