New residents
Room assignments for new residents will be on a first-come, first-served basis, based on a complete application and receipt of your $400 security deposit.
Returning residents
Current residents can participate in Choose A Room in March for the following year. Details will be sent to you in November.
Returning students who do not participate in Choose A Room will be assigned a room on a first-come, first-served basis, based on a complete application. Security deposits are carried forward.
Assignments for Fall housing are given first to returning residents participating in Choose A Room (learn more).
Assignments for all terms are done for New and Returning Students based on the deposit received date.
If you select a Themed Community on your application it will be considered your first preference, taking precedence over type of accommodation as well as roommate choice. If you want to live with a specific roommate within a Themed Community, please make sure the roommate also selects the same Themed Community.
If you and a friend wish to be roommates you must select each other in the Residence Portal. Instructions on how to do this will be emailed to you once we receive your security deposit. Roommates must be selected by June 15 in order for us to accommodate your request.
Please note that once a wait list has begun for Residence, students placed from the wait list are placed into the first available space and it is less likely that we will be able to accommodate roommate requests at this time in the assignments process.
Residence Services is committed to fostering an inclusive environment for all individuals residing in our facilities. At Mount Royal University, residence assignments are NOT determined by gender. Every residence space, including apartments and townhouses, welcomes all gender identities and expressions. Consequently, residents might share a unit with individuals whose gender identity differs from theirs.
Should you wish to reside in a same-gender unit, you are encouraged to indicate your gender during the application process, which will guide the assignment to a corresponding unit.
Be assured that your choice of gender will NOT affect your application's outcome. For further details, please reach out to Residence Services at residence@mtroyal.ca.
You will be advised of your room assignment in June (Fall semester), November (Winter semester), and April (Spring semester).
All correspondence will be sent to the email address listed on your application. Ensure that our email address - residence@mtroyal.ca - is added to your contacts or safe list to prevent our correspondence from being automatically deposited in a junk mail folder and deleted.
You may also log in to the Residence Portal any time after that to view your assignment and roommate details.
A room change freeze is implemented for the first month of each term, allowing residents to settle in and get acquainted with their roommates.
Conflicts may occur, and Residence Services encourages you to discuss any issues with your roommates and RA before considering a room change. If a change is still necessary, you can submit a request through the Residence Portal.
Should your room change be approved, you'll receive notification via email or phone to collect your new keys on the designated date. You'll typically have a weekend to transfer your belongings and complete the check-out process from your previous room. Failure to return the old room keys by the specified date will result in charges for both rooms.
