Internationally educated nurses (IENs) who wish to bring their world of knowledge to the Canadian workforce can make the transition smoothly with Mount Royal University’s Bridge to Canadian Nursing (BCN) program. The BCN program provides the support and resources for you to:
- Enhance your English skills
- Build your nursing knowledge and practice skills; and
- "Bridge" to Canadian nursing practice.
Developed specifically for you
The Substantially Equivalent Competency (SEC) assessment helps to determine the educational courses you need to bridge your knowledge and nursing practice skills with those required for Canadian nursing practice. The College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) will have identified specific courses to help you prepare for the Canadian Registered Nurses Examination (CRNE). The BCN program will help you “bridge” the differences between your previous nursing experience and Canadian practices in areas such as:
- Professional terminology and communication for nurses
- Professional nursing in Canada
- Health assessment and professional nursing care
- Pathophysiology and pharmacology
- Critical thinking and clinical judgement in nursing practice
- Specialty nursing theory and practice – mental health, maternal newborn heath, child health
- Nursing clinical practice

Real world experience
The BCN program includes a supervised, 160 hour clinical practicum for those required by CARNA to have nursing practice experience in a Canadian healthcare setting. You will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge and skills in an acute care medical or surgical setting. Those requiring specialty nursing practice experience will have opportunity to complete a clinical practicum in mental health, child health or maternal newborn settings. These ‘real world experiences’ will assist you in preparing for the CRNE and providing safe, competent nursing care in Canadian health care settings.
