A dedicated and versatile music educator, Kat Hammer teaches lute, baroque guitar, and The Guitarist’s Guide to Music Theory. With a deep appreciation for both historical and contemporary repertoire, they bring a well-rounded approach to instruction that blends technical precision with expressive artistry. Their teaching philosophy emphasizes curiosity, clarity, and musical storytelling, encouraging students not only to master their instruments but also to develop a deeper understanding of the music they play.
Kat began her classical guitar studies with Jacob Solomons in Calgary and has since pursued advanced studies across Canada, Germany, and England. This diverse educational background has shaped a broad and nuanced perspective on performance practice, interpretation, and pedagogy. She holds a Master of Arts in Music Theory and Analysis, and integrates this academic expertise into her teaching, making complex theoretical concepts accessible and directly relevant to performers. Kat has studied lute and baroque guitar with Clive Titmuss and has performed in masterclasses with Paul O'Dette and Sylvain Bergeron. Recently she has been a guest lecturer at Guitarfest West and the Nelson Guitar Festival.
As an educator, Kat works with students of all levels, from beginners building a strong technical foundation to advanced players refining their artistry and preparing for performances or examinations. Her lessons are tailored to individual goals and interests, weaving together historical context, analytical insight, and practical musicianship. Her lute students come from all backgrounds, previous guitar experience is not needed.
Kat has been an active performer in Canada for over 20 years, appearing as both a soloist and chamber musician. Her repertoire spans from Renaissance and Baroque works on lute and early guitar to contemporary compositions for classical guitar. She is known for thoughtful, engaging performances that highlight the expressive possibilities of plucked string instruments. In 2025, her solo lute and baroque guitar album Standards was nominated for a YYC Music Award for Classical Album of the Year, reflecting both her artistry and her commitment to bringing refined, accessible performances to a wide audience.
Whether in the studio or on stage, Kat is passionate about sharing the richness of the lute and guitar traditions while inspiring a lifelong connection to music in her students and listeners alike.
