After you have applied to attend

If you meet all graduation requirements for your program and your Convocation Attendance form has been received, there is little that you need to do leading up to Convocation day.

Guest attendance
We respect that Convocation is a day to celebrate accomplishments with friends and family; however, due to capacity limitations of our space, guest attendance will be limited to four per graduand.

Graduation photographs
Lifetouch Photography is the official graduation photographer for Mount Royal University. There will be an opportunity to have graduation photographs taken on campus. In addition, Lifetouch will be available for graduates on Convocation day on a first come first serve basis.

Lifetouch will provide all appropriate gowns and caps for your photographs.

Convocation day

Arrive early
Graduates should arrive on campus no later than one hour prior to the ceremony.

Even with submission of the Convocation Attendance form, Mount Royal cannot guarantee ceremony inclusion if you arrive after the scheduled ceremony start time.

What do I wear?
All graduates will wear a blue gown and cap. You will also wear a hood which is specific to your program of study. The gowns typically reach your knees or several inches below. Beneath the gown, business casual wear is suggested. Denim is discouraged.

Where do I park?
You and your guests may park free of charge in any campus lot on Convocation day.

Where do I go?
All Convocation activities take place at Mount Royal’s Recreation Centre.

First, pick up your regalia from the Multi-Purpose room (U133). From there you need to go next door to the Stanley Gym to pick up your parchment and gather with other graduates of your faculty and program.

What happens next?
Once you have picked up your regalia and parchment, Mount Royal staff will help you line up in alphabetical order within your program and faculty. This is how you will cross the stage, so it is very important to stay in this order throughout the ceremony. Ceremony Marshalls will then lead you to the Triple Gymnasium.

What happens at the ceremony?
The ceremony will typically last for two and a half hours. You and your guests are requested to remain in the Triple Gymnasium for the duration of the ceremony.

The ceremony starts with speeches and presentations of special awards, followed by you, the graduates, crossing the stage. Ceremony Marshalls will tell you when it is time to stand and proceed to the stage. The dean or associate dean for your faculty will read your name from the parchment. It is important that when you reach the podium you have the parchment folder open so your name is visible to the reader.

Once your name has been read you can proceed to centre stage to meet Mount Royal’s President and have a photograph taken. Alumni and Community Relations will provide information on how to purchase this photograph.

After the ceremony

Return regalia
Your regalia must be returned to the Multi-Purpose room (U133) after the ceremony.

Celebrate!
Celebrate your accomplishments with family and friends – you’re now a Mount Royal University graduate. Congratulations!
