Visualizing Fragmentation for Coordinated Action

 

How might we leverage systems mapping and stakeholder engagement to strengthen understanding, alignment and collective impact among youth-serving organizations?

 

 

The Visualizing Fragmentation for Coordinated Action team recognized that youth well-being in Calgary depends on many different parts of the system working well together. Their Catamount Journey was grounded in unearthing the roots of fragmentation within the youth-serving sector and exploring how systems mapping can translate complexity into shared understanding, laying the foundation for greater coordination and collective action across organizations.

A research report and interactive activity were intentionally designed to complement one another. While the report investigates the root causes of fragmentation within the youth-serving sector and explores the potential of participatory systems mapping as a tool for collective sensemaking, the interactive activity demonstrates this concept in practice. Rather than presenting a static systems map, the activity translates insights and complex system relationships uncovered through the systems mapping process into an experiential, choose-your-own adventure story that allows participants to navigate the system through the eyes of a young person.

In doing so, the project explores how systems mapping can extend beyond data visualization by enabling stakeholders to move from simply visualizing complexity to developing the shared understanding needed for coordinated action across the youth-serving sector.
