CANADA'S ANTI-SPAM LEGISLATION (CASL)

What is CASL?

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) prohibits sending certain commercial electronic messages (CEMs) without first obtaining the recipient's consent. CEMs are any electronic message (e.g. emails, texts), that encourage participation in a commercial activity.

The core activities of the University, including the teaching, learning, scholarship, research and student support operations of the University, are not considered commercial activities. Emails sent in relation to these operations are not CEMs and CASL does not apply to those communications. In addition, CASL contains several exemptions that may apply to certain electronic communications from the University.

Frequently Asked Questions:

When am I permitted to send electronic messages?
The University will send electronic messages, including emails and texts, in accordance with CASL. You may receive email communication from MRU where:
  • The email is not commercial or otherwise does not meet the definition of a CEM.
  • The CEM is exempted from the application of CASL, such as with CEMs sent for the purpose of raising funds for a charity.
  • You have provided consent to be sent the CEM.

I have received an electronic message in error, what should I do?
If you do not wish to continue to receive CEMs from the University, you can unsubscribe from receiving further communications. To do so, please follow the instructions that are included in the CEM that was sent to you.

If you have any further questions or concerns about a commercial electronic message sent by the University, please contact caslinfo@mtroyal.ca.
