Archie McLean

Associate Profesor

 

Archie McLean is an Associate Professor in the department of Journalism & Digital Media at Mount Royal University. He is passionate about student-centred teaching, helping learners build skills and understand the world around them by exploring our rapidly changing media landscape.

 Archie’s research and service work focuses broadly on digital journalism, including online publishing, artificial intelligence, ethics and community-centred journalism. As part of this work, he served as managing editor of the award-winning Calgary Journal student publication from 2018 to 2025, overseeing the publication of hundreds of student stories. Before coming to Mount Royal in 2016, Archie spent nearly 15 years as a reporter and editor, first at the Edmonton Journal and later at CBC North in Yellowknife, where he served as managing editor for radio, TV and digital media in three territories and 10 languages. 

 A graduate of the University of Victoria and Columbia University, Archie grew up in Prince George, B.C. but now lives in Calgary with his family. In his free time, you can find him skiing, hiking, golfing, camping and cycling in the mountains.
