Emergency Response Overview

In an emergency, employees, students and visitors need to respond safely and quickly. You may be notified of a campus emergency through multiple channels that are part of MRU’s Emergency Notification System

Emergency Preparedness Week - May 6 - 11, 2024

Everyone has a role to play in an emergency. Emergency Preparedness Week is an opportunity for you to take action to ensure you are prepared to protect yourself, your family and your community during an emergency. This year, the theme is Be Prepared. Know Your Risks. Some steps you can take to prepare for emergencies both on and off campus include:

  • Downloading MRU Now, MRU's official safety app to receive push notifications during campus emergencies or other time sensitive events. Ensure notifications are enabled on your Android or Apple device.
  • Reviewing MRU's emergency procedures below to help prepare you for specific emergencies that may arise on campus. These procedures can also be found in the MRU Now app.
  • Downloading and printing a one-page emergency procedures poster (also available in both 11x17in and 8.5x11in format) for quick reference. There are also What to do in an Emergency blue booklets located in each classroom and department/faculty office, or you can request a copy.
  • Taking time to familiarise yourself with your surroundings, including nearby exits and escape routes, fire alarm pull stations, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), before an emergency occurs. During an emergency, remember to stay calm, assess your surroundings and your options, and take action to ensure your own safety.
  • Visting getprepared.ca to learn about what you can do at home to prepare for emergencies, as well as general information on emergency preparedness.

Active Assailant

An active assailant is an individual posing an immediate threat of death or harm to others. If faced with an active assailant on campus, your first and best option is to RUN and escape the threat by the shortest and safest means possible. See more.

Evacuation

Treat all alarms as real and evacuate when you hear the fire alarm or when directed by Security Services or an Emergency Warden.  When evacuating, take any personal belongings if they are easily accessible. Walk to the nearest emergency exit. Remain calm and do not run. See more.

Fire

If you encounter a fire or smoke, pull the nearest manual fire alarm pull station if the alarm has not been activated and evacuate immediately using the nearest safe exit. See more.

Medical Emergency

If the emergency is or is potentially life threatening, call 911 immediately and direct someone else to call Security Services at 403.440.5900. Approach the injured person only if it is safe to do so. Do not move an injured person unless it is essential for their safety. Only provide first aid if you are trained and it is safe to do so. Stay on the phone with 911 and follow their instructions until emergency personnel arrive. See more.

Severe Weather/Shelter in Place

In the event of severe weather or other outdoor hazard, you may be instructed to Shelter in Place. If so, take shelter indoors, close doors and windows, and stay away from exterior walls and windows. Remain sheltered until emergency services gives the "all clear". See more.

Suspicious Activity

If you encounter a suspicious person or package, trust your instincts, ensure your own personal safety, and report it to Security Services when safe to do so. For crimes in progress, call 911. See more.

If there is an immediate danger to the health or safety of yourself or others, call 911. For all other situations or if you need assistance, call Security Services at 403.440.5900.
