
Galapagos Islands and Ecuador General Education Field School 2021
Do you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience while earning General Education credits?
In this field school you will follow in Darwin's footsteps by exploring the Galapagos Islands while at the same time reading On the Origin of Species. Students will learn about the biodiversity of the Galapagos Islands while helping conduct hands-on research on the giant Galapagos tortoises. Students will stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern, visit the UNESCO world heritage city of Quito, and discover the political and cultural realities of Ecuador. Students will also travel to the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest to explore this habitat and the species that inhabit it, and learn about the efforts by local Indigenous communities to protect their cultures and traditions from the increasing pressures from development and industry.
Courses
Students who successfully complete thi field school will receive credti for the following two courses:
- GNED 3101 - Experienncing Science (3 credits)
- GNED 3301 - Experiencing communities & Societies (3 credits)
Prerequisite: One of General Education 1201, 1202 or 1203
Interested students should meet with their academic advisor to confirm prerequisites and the abillity to use the two courses for credits in their specific program prior to joining the field school.

Students must be available for pre-departure lectures, coursework and preparations from DATES.
Final assignmetns will be due after the course travel dates.

Program Costs
Galapagos Islands and Ecuador General Education Field School Program Fees - $8,238
The Galapagos Islands and Ecuador General Education Field School Program Fees include:
- Local transportation during the field school;
- Accommodation;
- Most meals;
- All course-related excursions, visits and activities;
- Faculty expenses;
- MRU administration fees.
Program fees are payable in person at the Office of the Registrar (A101) using the Blue Field School Payment Slip, according to the payment deadlines outlined in the following table:

*Initial program fee deposit is non-refundable and secures the participant's place in the program. Possibility of refund of subsequent deposits due to withdrawal from the program will be assessed and determined at the time of withdrawal according to the Field School Refund Policy. Program fees do not include course tuition or additional student expenses (see below).
MRU Tuition & General Fees
MRU tuition & fees for GNED 3101 and GNED 3301 are in addition to the program fees and will be assessed to each student's account in April, 2020. They are payable to MRU by the spring 2020 fee payment deadline.
Additional Student Expenses
Students are responsible for all additional expenses not included in the program fees such as return airfare, trip cancellation and interruption insurance, travel health and medical insurance, snacks, some meals, immunizations, passport, travel essentials, personal spending and miscellaneous expenses.
Estimates of additional student costs are available at the information sessions, from the field school instructors or from International Education.
Financial Assistance
Participants in this field school will receive a $1,000 grant from the MRU International Mobility Award to use towards the costs associated with the field school.
