Hazardous, Chemical and Biological Waste
Mount Royal University is home to over 20 laboratories, maintenance workshops, and swimming pool facilities. Many of these laboratories and workspaces generate hazardous or biohazardous waste that must be disposed of properly to protect people and the environment.
The specific requirements are identified within various Acts and Regulations, including but not limited to, the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations, Alberta Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, and Alberta Fire Code. Additional requirements may be found in University and/or Faculty policies and procedures.
If you have any questions or require clarification regarding disposal of hazardous or biohazardous waste that are not answered in this manual, please contact ehs@mtroyal.ca or labsafety@mtroyal.ca.
Department of Science & Technology Waste Disposal
Science & Technology (S&T) Waste Disposal: All waste generated within S&T must be properly documented before pickup.
Chemical hazardous waste requires a fully completed Form-3003 Hazardous Waste Disposal Form, which must be placed with the container.
Biological waste requires completion of the Form-3004 Biohazardous Waste Disposal Form.
Waste Disposal outside of Science & Technology
Departments outside of S&T must submit a Hazardous and Biohazardous Waste Disposal Pick Up Form.
Please note the requesting department will be responsible for all charges associated with the disposal. Do not submit waste for collection until confirmation of pickup has been received, and ensure that the appropriate disposal form (Form-3003 Hazardous Waste Disposal Form or Form-3004 Biohazardous Waste Disposal Form) is securely attached to the waste.
For detailed procedures and requirements, please refer to the applicable SOP (SOP-1002 Hazardous Waste Disposal or SOP-1010 Biohazardous Waste Disposal).
Packing Group 1 Chemicals
Any chemical classified as Packing Group 1 (PG1), regardless of its TDG hazard class, must be evaluated. PG 1 materials represent the highest level of hazard and therefore require enhanced controls and oversight.
If safe to do so, please consider deactivating or neutralizing the PG1 material by dilution, neutralization, etc., provided it can be done safely and in compliance with regulations.
A Customer Stabilization Form and a Form-3003 Hazardous Waste Disposal Form must be completed before submitting PG I materials for waste disposal.
