Olurotimi (Roti) Akinsanmi

Instructor
Project Management Extension Certificate

Faculty of Continuing Education

Roti Akinsanmi enrolled at Mount Royal in 2008, seeking a flexible academic path to complement his strategic pivot into the Canadian corporate landscape. Those learned skills shaped his career in business, and now as an alum and instructor, he channels that experience into creating real-world lessons that build Monday-morning confidence for his students.

Teaching in the project management extension certificate program since 2014, Roti reduces complex concepts to proven principles and links theory directly to workplace practice.

His industry experience spans two decades of executive and entrepreneurial leadership, from heading digital innovation and strategic partnerships at a major Canadian airline to driving product strategy for one of North America's leading children's streaming platforms and founding technology ventures. That breadth flows directly into his teaching.

Roti strongly believes non-credit education is a critical component of lifelong learning, and to ensure its currency he embraces new technologies and cutting-edge resources to enhance curriculum design and student engagement.

"Roti's work on our curriculum development projects has been instrumental in ensuring that our courses remain relevant and dynamic," says Johanna Franconeri, a Continuing Education program coordinator. " In particular, his recent overhaul of the Introduction to Project Management and Project Management Capstone courses reflect his innovative mindset, as he brought fresh ideas and perspectives to the curriculum, ensuring that the content was not only current but also challenging and engaging for students."

For 40 years, Calgary horn players have likely been taught by Laurie Matiation, heard her perform, or attended an event she brought to life.

A horn section stalwart with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) for 36 years until retiring in 2019, Laurie has taught at Mount Royal’s Conservatory since 2003 and has served as artistic director of its Academy and Advanced Performance Program since 2018.

Laurie is credited with building Conservatory partnerships with other arts organizations. One notable example is the ensemble-in-residence program, enabling students to work for sustained periods with professional artists. This has produced collaborations with the U of C’s School of Creative and Performing Arts and the JUNO-nominated Land’s End Ensemble.

Laurie has also created music education opportunities in the broader community, including the annual HornFest, bringing together horn players of all ages and stages for a fun weekend of performance.

“What stands out most is Laurie’s ability to connect with students on a personal level, fostering not only musical growth but also a genuine sense of caring and motivation,” says Heather Wooton, assistant principal horn (retired) with the CPO. “Many of her students have gone on to continue their studies in music and follow paths as professional musicians and music educators. She has truly created a legacy to be proud of.”
