Aviation funding

Students in the Bachelor of Aviation Management - Flight Crew Operations Concentration, and students in the Aviation Diploma are eligible to receive additional funding from Alberta Student Aid. The intention of this funding is to aid in covering the costs of flying components. Please review the FAQs below for more information.

As an Aviation student, how much additional student loaning funding can I access through AB Student Aid?
Students in the Bachelor of Aviation Management - Flight Crew Operations Concentration, and students in the Aviation Diploma students are eligible to receive an additional $22,500 total ($7500 for three semesters) from AB Student Aid.

What do I need to do to be eligible for the additional funding?
Bachelor of Aviation Management students must be in the Flight Crew Operations Concentration to be eligible for the additional funding. If you have not yet declared your Concentration, do so here. Students in the Aviation Diploma do not declare a Concentration.

How do I access these additional funds?

  1. If you are in the Bachelor of Aviation Management, your first step is to Declare your Concentration of Flight Crew Operations. Aviation Diploma students can skip this step.
  2. Start your student loan application via AB Student Aid - applications open annually in June for the upcoming academic year
  3. Fill out your student loan application carefully to avoid delays in processing. Find your program and year of study below, and submit your application as described:

*The loan maximum amount of $8,500/semester is based on the 2024/2025 academic year; this number may change. Please note: Not all students receive the maximum; Students may receive grant funding over and above the amounts noted. The amount a student receives is determined by AB Student Aid and is based on their financial assessment and the details provided in the application.

**The AB Student Aid maximum lifetime loan limit for students in the diploma or degree is $85,000. Students obtaining the full amount noted above for each semester of the Bachelor of Aviation Management program may reach this loan limit before the end of their program and will need to plan accordingly.

This seems confusing, why?

While the application details above may appear complex, they are intentionally structured to streamline the process with AB Student Aid for both Aviation programs.

Alberta Student Aid approved additional flying funding in 2018 for the Aviation diploma and has agreed that funding can be applied to those in the Aviation Management -  Flight Crew Operations Concentration. To do this and prevent funding delays, degree students have to apply for the additional funding as if you were in the diploma program and follow the steps above.

What other funding opportunities should I be aware of?
All MRU students are encouraged to apply for awards annually from Nov. 1 to Mar 1. There are several awards specific to Aviation students, including the Air Access Bursary. Find out more at mru.ca/awards and contact awards@mtroyal.ca if you have questions.
