Welcome to the annual MRU Phishing Tournament! Every October brave souls from around the campus join the Tournament to see if they can spot all the phishing training emails that have been sent that month.
How does it work?
- In October, every Tuesday and Thursday around noon, a phishing training email is sent to the Tournament participants.
- Participants report the email in Gmail by clicking the three dots in the upper right corner of the email window and selecting "Report phishing" from the drop down menu. If that feature is not available, they can forward the email to reportphish@mtroyal.ca.
- Each report earns one entry into a draw for a wireless charging station. Employees also earn a reward that lowers their risk score. The winner is drawn on the last business day of October.
- Everyone who identifies all 8 phishing training emails is recognized for their hard work in the next issue of the Cyber Spotlight and Our Community.
Who can participate?
- The Phishing Tournament is open to students, faculty, staff and contractors. If you attend classes at MRU or work here, you can participate. Students won't earn rewards but they will be entered into the draw.
How do you identify a phishing training email?
- Phishing training emails look just like a phishing email. They allow you to practice identifying phishing emails in a safe environment.
- Emails that are too good to be true, ask you for sensitive information they should already know or shouldn't have, contain links that don't go where they say they do or contain attachments that you aren't expecting are all examples of phishing training emails.
- Review your training or visit Google's support pages to learn more.
If you are looking for a fun way to lower your risk score, this is it! Join the Tournament today and start earning those rewards.
