What is the Steps to Well-Being (STWB) Program?

STWB is a 8-week program designed to support students’ mental health through supervised physical activity, community building, and nutrition guidance. We welcome students with all movement backgrounds and experiences. If you’re facing barriers to being active or struggling to incorporate wellness practices into your life, this program is here to meet you where you are and help you create lasting well-being habits.

 

The Winter 2026 session runs from January 12 to March 14, 2026, with no sessions during February 16–20.

What is Included?

  • Free personal training sessions* (2 individual, one-on-one; 3 sessions in pairs, two-on-one)
  • Group fitness sessions* (up to 2 per week)
  • Individual nutritionist session + 1 follow-up 
  • Events with other participating students
  • $50 Everything gift card

*Personal training and group fitness sessions will be held at the MRU Recreation Centre.

How Much Does It Cost?

The program is free, but spots are limited—only enroll if you can commit to the full 8 weeks.

Who Can Participate?

Current MRU students who: 

  • Have mild to moderate mental health concerns that pose a barrier to engaging in physical activity
  • Can commit to the program without disrupting their academic responsibilities 
  • Haven’t previously participated in STWB
  • Don’t have the financial means to pay for personal training sessions

When Can Students Enroll?

Enrollment opens November 3rd, 2025 and continues until all 24 spots are filled.

How Can I Enroll?

STEP 1: Make an Appointment

Book a session with a Counselor at Student Counselling Services OR a Mental Health Nurse at Health Services to discuss if the program is a good fit.

    Walk-in appointments available weekday afternoons (starting at 12:45 pm, first-come,  first-served, urgent requests prioritized)

  • Health Services | Room U216 (left when you enter)
    Call 403.440.6326, book online, or visit in person

 

STEP 2: Receive a Pre-Enrollment Voucher
In your appointment you will learn more about the program.  If you meet the criteria and the program fits your needs, you will receive a voucher.

 

STEP 3: Complete the Enrollment Forms
Scan the QR code on the voucher to complete the enrollment form and the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q). A doctor’s clearance may be required.

 

STEP 4: Schedule Your Participation
You’ll receive an email to arrange a session with the program coordinator to finalize your schedule.
