The Indigenous Hawai'i Field School 2020

Description

The Indigenous Hawai'i Field School critically engages students with Aloha 'Āina and activism on the Big Island of Hawai'i. We introduce Kanaka Maoli Indigenous sovereignty, literature, history, music and non-fiction as well as volunteer for several community work days, giving back to the land.Students will also have the unique opportunity to engage with community elders, local scholars and knowledge keepers about the oral and written materials. We will experience living with the land, securing food sovereignty, asserting political and cultural sovereignty and maintaining and revitalizing language amid a tumultuous political history on the Big Island.

Courses

Participants will be enrolled in the following two courses for a total of 6 MRU credits:

  • INST 2720 - Travel Studies in Indigenous Studies - 3 credits (Recommended Preparation: Indigenous Studies 1101 or 1111)
  • INST 3710 - Place- and Land-based Learning: Decolonizing and Indigenous Perspectives - 3 credits (Prerequisite: INST 1101)

This field school is open to all MRU students who have not already taken INST 2720 or INST 3710 and who have/will have the necessary prerequisites (INST 1101) and recommended preparation prior to spring semester 2020.

Interested students should meet with their academic advisor to confirm prerequisites and confirm their ability to use the two courses for credits in their specific program prior to joining the field school.

Program Dates

In Hawai'i: June 7 - June 26, 2020

Successful applicants will also commit to monthly group pre-departure meetings/classes beginning in January, 2020. the meeting schedule will be determined after acceptance.

Final assignments will be due by July 3, 2020.

Application Process

  1. Access the Field School Application Form
  2. Submit the following to International Education (EB 3005) by the application deadline:
  • The completed Field school Application Form
  • A one-page Statement of Purpose describing your interest in being part of this opportunity.

Following departmental assessment, successful applicants will be notified to proceed with deposit payment. The initial non-refundable deposit must be paid at time of acceptance in to the program to confirm your spot.

Program Costs

Indigenous Hawa'i Field School Program Fees - $3,515.00

The Indigenous Hawai'i Field School Program Fees include:

  • Accommodation in Hawai'i;
  • Local transportation for all field school excursions (excluding airport transfers);
  • Faculty expenses;
  • MRU administration fee;
  • Activity/entrance fees for all field school activities;
  • Contingency fee.

Program fees are payable in person at the Office of the Registrar (A101) using the Blue Field School Payment Slip according to the payment deadlines outlined in the following table:

1st deposit* November 30, 2019 $500
2nd deposit January 15, 2020 $1508
3rd deposit March 15, 2020 $1507

*Initial program fee is non-refundable and secures the participant's place in the program. Possibility of refund of subsequent deposits due to withdrawal from the program and will be assessed and determined at the time of withdrawal according to the field school refund policy. Program fees do not include course tuition or additional student expenses (see below).

MRU Tuition & General Fees

MRU tuition and fees for INST 2720 and INST 3710 are in addition to the program fees and will be assessed to each student's account in April, 2020. They are payable to MRU by the spring 2020 fee payment deadline.

Additional Student Expenses

Students are responsible for all additional expenses not included in the program fees such as return airfare to Hawai'i, trip interruption and cancellation insurance, travel health and medical insurance, passport, immunizations (if required), meals, airport transfers, travel essentials, personal spending, etc.
