Following a missed season due to the pandemic, this year the Mount Royal Cougars came back fierce in the regular season and are now set to represent Mount Royal in six different playoff runs.

Upcoming home games for fans to enjoy at Mount Royal

This weekend, MRU hosts the University of Saskatchewan in the Canada West women’s hockey semifinal best-of-three series on home ice at the Flames Community Arenas. The puck drops Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 6 p.m., if necessary. The Cougars women’s hockey team completed the regular season in first place for the first time in team history with a 18-5-0 record, earning them a bye in the first round of playoffs. They are also currently ranked second nationally by U SPORTS.

In their last season of play, 2019-20, the women’s hockey team finished second in Canada West and won their first game at nationals, guaranteeing a top-four finish before the tournament was cancelled due to the pandemic. This year the team is back with clear determination to return to the country’s top tournament.

“We are excited our women's hockey program finished in first place in Canada West regular season play for the first time in Mount Royal history,” says Karla Karch, director of Cougars Athletics and Recreation. “Their hard work, perseverance and commitment have been rewarded, giving the team a bye in the first round and the right to host one of two semifinals. We are super proud of their accomplishments to date and look forward to seeing this continue into the playoffs.”

Also at Mount Royal this weekend is the Canada West women’s basketball playoff tournament, co-hosted by the Cougars and the University of Calgary Dinos. MRU completed the regular season with a 5-11 record and are set to play their first game on Friday at 7 p.m. on Kenyon Court versus Thompson Rivers University. A victory Friday night will secure the Cougars a game in round two on Saturday.
