Pearls of Wisdom set to shine
After a twelve-year hiatus that left an ocean-sized hole in Calgary’s social calendar, Mount Royal University is thrilled to reintroduce Pearls of Wisdom. The high-energy soiree is making a triumphant return to reclaim its title as “the best lobsterfest in the West.”
On the night of June 6, Pearls promises a spirited, reimagined MRU tradition where East Coast charm meets Western flair and celebration meets impact. Guests will gather on campus for an evening of lobsters, oysters and unforgettable experiences merging to refresh a beloved classic.
An ideal opportunity for Calgary’s leaders and community champions to engage more deeply with MRU, Pearls will again enhance connections with peers and supporters across Calgary, and let attendees see firsthand where the University is heading.
Known for its unique blend of maritime hospitality and academic support, Pearls of Wisdom was never just about the food—though the fresh Atlantic lobster, traditionally flown in and served by the legendary Rodney "The Oysterman" Clark, was certainly a draw. At its heart, the evening, first held in 1998, has always been a powerful catalyst for student success.
“Mount Royal is Calgary’s community-engaged university, and Pearls of Wisdom always provided a heartfelt touchpoint for so many members of our community gathering to enjoy themselves with purpose,” said Melanie Rogers, vice-president of MRU’s Department of Community Engagement at MRU. “We want to celebrate that collaborative spirit again as we look forward to some galvanizing initiatives at MRU for the benefit of students, our city and Alberta.”
With decor, appetizers and ambiance setting the scene, the party will be emcee’d by Jonathan Love, well-known for his work in the Calgary music and arts community, and also a long-time instructor and friend of MRU. Throughout the event, the energy will be captured on canvas. At the end of the evening the original piece will be raffled off to a lucky guest.
Rodney’s Oyster House will lead the dinner with an entertaining stage show featuring lobster cracking and preparation for the feast to come. The iconic seafood restaurant’s crew brings their signature charisma and expertise, providing an interactive, "behind-the-scenes" look at maritime tradition that serves as both education and entertainment. Celtic band Fraid Knot will accompany the meal before turning up the energy and shifting into a kitchen party vibe as the dance floor opens.
Net proceeds from the event directly support student awards, transforming generosity into opportunity and creating ripples of impact that extend across campus and beyond. In particular, MRU is focusing on Alberta’s health care and science needs and where the University can contribute as one of the province’s top-tier providers of health and science education with our world-class health, nursing and midwifery, and science and technology programs, and plans to innovate in these vital areas.
"I am delighted that Pearls of Wisdom is returning to MRU. Scholarships, made possible through your attendance at Pearls, reinforce MRU's abiding commitment to student success, making higher education affordable and allowing students to concentrate on academic performance,” said Hunter Wight, honorary chair of Pearls of Wisdom 2026 and the event’s founder. “I encourage you to join us for what I know will be a truly exceptional evening.”
As Signature Sponsor, Trico Homes is at the heart of Pearls of Wisdom’s revival, but their relationship with MRU runs deeper than just this event.
“Trico Homes has been a valued friend to MRU for years,” says Terry Kellam, associate vice-president of Development and Alumni Relations at MRU. “They have shown great commitment to supporting community growth and the creation of opportunities through their philanthropy. We are deeply grateful for not only their support in reviving this well loved tradition, but also for all they have done for Mount Royal University."
Established in 2008, the Trico Charitable Foundation has made many contributions to the Calgary area with their support ranging from health care and community initiatives to post-secondary and higher education programs.
