Mount Royal University is committed to continuous improvement that involves assessing itself against sector-related benchmark data and historical survey results. With the feedback these surveys collect, MRU can ensure students are provided with the best educational experience possible and better understand its position in the post-secondary education sector provincially and nationally.

In support of institutional assessment and quality assurance processes, Mount Royal University participates in surveys highlighted below. Please visit Survey Analytics under the Business Intelligence and Analytics section of the website for more information about the results.

Mount Royal University also conducts surveys of the campus community members on an ad hoc basis to meet emerging information needs.

Canadian University Survey Consortium (CUSC)

CUSC has investigated student experiences and satisfaction since 1994 to better understand the Canadian undergraduate population. Mount Royal University has participated in CUSC annually as a member institution since 2010. CUSC measures student characteristics, experiences, perceptions, and satisfaction, targeting a sub-sample of the undergraduate degree-seeking student population using a suite of three surveys administered on a three-year survey cycle:

  • First-year students
  • Middle-years students
  • Graduating students

CUSC helps MRU understand how students regard the university and to compare itself to the aggregate results of participating Canadian universities.

Graduate Follow-Up Survey (GFUS)

Every two years, Mount Royal University administers the Graduate Follow-up Survey. Recent university graduates receive the survey about six months after completing their program. The same cohort of graduates invited to participate in GFUS is contacted to participate in the provincial Graduate Outcomes Survey two years later.

GFUS asks similar questions about graduates’ educational experiences, post-graduation employment, and further education outcomes as the Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS). By asking similar questions, MRU can understand graduates’ post-graduation outcomes soon after graduation and how they have changed over time.

Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS)

Every two years, Alberta Advanced Education (AE) commissions an external research company to administer the Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS). Surveys are completed by graduates approximately two years after graduation. Although the government administers this survey, the ministry releases raw data files to institutions so they can analyze their own results.

The specific objectives of GOS are to:

  • Determine graduates’ satisfaction with their post-secondary education experiences.
  • Explore graduates’ employment outcomes.
  • Understand how students finance their education.
  • Describe the demographic profile of graduates from different fields of study.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

NSSE is grounded in more than 30 years of research about effective practices in higher education. Generally, NSSE allows institutions to estimate the time and effort students put into various educational activities. It also captures students’ perceptions about the extent to which they believe their university provides students with engagement opportunities.

By administering NSSE, Mount Royal University can assess and improve the quality of education it provides to students. Since 2017, Mount Royal has administered NSSE on a three-year cycle.
