MRU Emergency Housing
Emergency Housing is intended to provide temporary (14 nights maximum) emergency accommodation to current active MRU students who are experiencing an immediate personal safety risk (emotional, physical, and/or sexual harm), are facing intolerable living conditions, and/or who are financially destitute. It is a joint service offered by Residence Services, Wellness Services, and Early Support, and other on-campus partners.
This program is designed to be a no-cost, short-term solution to allow students the opportunity to work with on-campus resources to create more long-term plans and solutions to the concern that brought them into Emergency Housing.
Who is Eligible?
Only current MRU students are eligible for emergency housing. Emergency Housing support will only be extended to students who are experiencing one or more of the following criteria:
- an immediate personal safety risk (such as emotional, psychological, physical, and/or sexual harm).
- facing intolerable living conditions ("dwellings should have adequate space for the inhabitants, be properly maintained, and provide protection from the elements and other threats to health and well-being; including safe drinking water, sanitation, heating, lighting, and emergency services", Canadian Human Rights Commission).
- financial destitution.
How do I apply?
Students can access the program by referral through any of the following services on campus:
- MRU Counsellors
- MRU Mental Health Nurses
- After Hours Peer Support Coordinators
- SAMRU Support Services Coordinator
- Student Success Program Specialist (MRU Early Support)
- MRU Dating, Domestic and Sexualized Violence Office
- MRU Office of Student Community Standards
What to Expect
If you are accepted into the Emergency Housing program you will be placed into a unit (that may have other students in it already). The room will have bedding, but you are welcome to bring some of your own things as well. We can provide small toiletries to get you settled, as well as some other limited resources such as food vouchers for Wyckham House.
You will be paired with a Support Advisor that you would be require to meet with shortly after intake to begin the long-term planning and solution finding. This advisor could be the person that referred you (see the list above for referral options) or assigned by Residence Services.
