Physicians & Psychiatrist

Medical support for mental health

Mental health is an important part of your academic success and well-being.
At Health Services, we have clinic physicians and a psychiatrist
who support the mental health of the MRU community.

Our services

Clinic physicians

Our clinic physicians assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of mental health concerns. They work collaboratively with a team of registered nurses, mental health nurses and licensed practical nurses, as well as behavioral health consultants in partnership with the Primary Care Network.

Psychiatrist

Our on-site psychiatrist provides single session assessment for more complex mental health issues. Appointments are by phone only. Referral by your family physician is required (referral form). If you do not have a family physician, you can book an appointment with a Mental Health Nurse to explore referral options.

Who has access?

MRU community members can access mental health care from our clinic physicians and psychiatrist including:

  • All credit students, including occupational programs in Continuing Education
  • Faculty members of the Mount Royal Faculty Association (MRFA)
  • Employee members of the Mount Royal Staff Association (MRSA), Mount Royal exempt management and employees
  • The spouse and child dependents of students living in the Indigenous Family Residence program at Mount Royal

We strongly encourage you to receive ongoing care for your mental health needs. If you have a family physician in the community, we recommend you continue to see them to ensure continuity of your medical care.

Because of the high demand for access to medical services by our community members, when your relationship with Mount Royal comes to an end, either through graduation or withdrawal from your academic commitment and/or employment termination, you will be required to seek health care services outside of Mount Royal's medical clinic.

Please see the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta for the names of local physicians accepting new patients.

Make an appointment

Please use the contact information below to book an appointment with a clinic physician for a mental health concern.

New physician appointments regarding mental health are first booked with a mental health nurse. The information you share with the nurse will be communicated to the clinic physician to facilitate a better understanding of your needs. The nurse will identify strategies and resources to support your mental health and/or related concerns.

You will be asked if you are under the care of a family physician in the community and, if so, you will be encouraged to book an appointment with that physician for care continuity.

Cancellation policy

24-hour cancellation notice is required for all clinic physician appointments. Patients who no-show or provide insufficient notice will be charged a fee of $20. You can leave a message on the answering machine after hours.

To book an appointment with our psychiatrist, we require a referral from your physician. You can print a copy of our referral form to take to your family physician.

If you do not have a family physician, you can book an appointment with a Mental Health Nurse to explore referral options.

Cancellation policy

48-hour cancellation notice is required for all psychiatrist appointments. Patients who no-show or provide insufficient notice will be charged a fee of $100. If you are calling after hours, leave a voice message.
