tipi teachings – blackfoot and cree
special opportunity to participate in tipi teachings pilot courses
the office of Indigenization and decolonization (oid) is offering a non-credit course that helps build Indigenous cultural competency among members of the mru community and the general public.
tipi teachings are a series of immersive day-long courses that will take place on the mount royal campus. taught by blackfoot and cree elders, these courses will expose participants to a variety of traditional teachings on topics such as etiquette, family and social systems, traditional medicines, ceremonies, songs and dance, governance and more. in each course, participants will participate in traditional ceremonies and enjoy traditional foods as part of an authentic Indigenous learning experience. a light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
this is an incredible opportunity to develop your understanding and appreciation of traditional blackfoot and cree protocols. your participation and feedback on your experience will also help ensure future tipi teachings offerings will be a success.
location
the courses will be held outdoors in the centennial sundial garden (t-wing courtyard) at the mount royal campus.parking
the closest visitor parking is Lot 2 (near west gate entrance), lot 6a (near the riddell library & learning centre) and lot 7 (near the taylor centre for the performing arts). learn more about parking locations and payment.preparation
these pilot courses will take place in a tipi outdoors. please be sure to dress in comfortable clothes that are appropriate for the weather conditions and for sitting on cushions.please also review mount royal’s latest covid-19 safety measures.

as traditional foods will be served, dietary restrictions, food sensitivities and allergies may not be accommodated. if you have any dietary restrictions, please come prepared with your own food.funding opportunities
this course may be eligible for professional development funding. please check with your organization or professional association for more information.mount royal employees can access any pd funding they may have (through mrsa, mrfa, etc.) to cover the cost of this course.
grading
the courses are non-credit and non-graded.a certificate of participation will be awarded to students who attend.
